Swimming Pool

Postby josephinekelly » Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:45 pm

I want to go to US June, July and August this year. We have a pvc lined pool which can be wintered successfully for up to five months, but what do you do in the summertime? I would think covering it will produce soup! If the only solution is to have someone in each week to maintain it, does anyone know who would be best and the sort of price we would expect to pay. I have heard some bad tales of maintenance people collecting money for doing just about nothing. We live in fairly near Platres in the Troodos mountains

Do you have auto-fill?

If you don’t it will all evaporate away anyway and you won’t have to worry about it.

Personally I’d buy a ‘thermal cover (about £125) to stop evaporation, stick a load of chemicals in and ask a neighbour to throw some chlorine in once a month or so.

I bought a thermal cover this winter and got them to chuck in the winterizing chemicals. I didn't think you could do that in the heat months?

No problem... Kept ours on all summer (to stop evaporation), it was like a bath... ;-)

This cover cost us £500 and is pegged to the ground all around the pool. We have an 8x4 pool. Did you have to add any chemicals before the cover was put on? The firm who supplied the cover would have us believe you could not do this in the heat.

We just have a ‘thermal’ cover which is like industrial bubble-wrap which floats on the water…

However, why worry about it – what is the worst that can happen? Even if it all goes green a couple of days and chlorine/algaecide will clear it up for you.

The important thing (IMHO) is not to let all the water evaporate away given the drought crisis which we are facing at the moment.

Sorry, but we have got one, we inherited it. It has a PVC liner, otherwise I would have drained and forgotten it. Looks to me like we shall have to fork out for maintenance during our absence. I would not have another one though..... they are heaps of work and cost.
