I have somekind of bitter taste when I think of what is happening. Then I say to myself that life ain't fair and I have to deal with it like that, trying something else if what I do now doesn't work.

So what is my problem? The problem is this, after 16 years of school, a BS degree, 4 years experience in the field, I could say I do my job very well, and then I see somebody, that can hardly think on he's own, that knows only few words in english, doesn't speak greek, and he get's more than me per month. (Of course, he moves rocks from one place to another, and I work in an office, does that count?)

Why is that? I don't care, these guys can get four times more than me, my problem is why I am not paid accordingly. Because all these f**king employers want to make a fortune from nothing. I work and they are getting paid.

This sucks. :x

They are unable to buy their own home if their parents haven't provided a piece of land for them. Cyprus has changed. It is no longer the Cyprus I remember 15 years ago... hence why I will be moving to Canada in the summer. People lead a better quality life over there in comparison with Cyprus. The only thing Cyprus seems to offer is 365 days of sunshine *yawn* and beaches. I guess many British people retire here because they like the concept of living some place sunny. In reality, they'd be better off living some place else.

If you move to Alaska you will get even more money, seriously! There is a trade-off in everything. If a foreigner comes to Cyprus for the money then he should be stupid! Of course he should go to Canada or Australia or just stay in the UK if he wants to make lots of money, not to come to Cyprus!! But why retirees would be better of in living in Canada? In any case they do not work so low salaries is not a problem for them. So why shouldn't they come to Cyprus and have their sunshine and their good weather and instead go to retire in freezing Canada?

Of course it does! Working in an office is nowhere as hard as moving rocks! But see it this way: Those that move rocks get the most when they are young and strong. The older they get they less they will get, unless they learn some skills meanwhile. An educated person can build a career and earn much more when he is 50 then when he is 25!

Property is much cheaper in Canada, and you get better value for your money in terms of buying a home. Houses are too expensive here. An average 3 bedroom house in the suburbs of Limassol will cost at least 150,000 CYP whereas in Canada, 150,000 CYP equals to 385,000 CAD, and with that much money can buy you a 2 and a half storey mansion, with four bedrooms, an attic, basement, very spacious areas etc. So to answer your question Sotos, a British couple wishing to retire can get much better value with their money in Canada than they can here. And please don't compare the UK to Canada. The UK is only a little bit cheaper than Cyprus in some ways. Statistics show that London, UK, and Cyprus are the most expensive places to live in. Melbourne and Canada are the cheapest places to live with a better quality of life.

And just for the record, Canandians have a very hot summer! Canada is so picturesque and beautiful... everything is much cheaper, the people friendlier... everyone can afford luxury cars with one third of the price of what it would cost here. I call Canada the land of plenty... everyone has plenty, so they don't need to compete with their neighbour.

You are right, but what if I don't get to 50?

Anyway, I am not satisfied, but can't do anything about it, only maybe leave Cyprus.
Nobody here is calling me back after I send them my CV as they fear I will ask for a high salary according to my knowledge and experience. And they are right, I would. 8)

You would do yourself a world of good if you did. That's precisely why I am leaving. Everytime I visit Canada and come back to Cyprus, I see Cyprus with fresh eyes and I feel even more eager to leave this island. No disrespect to my Cypriot parents, though.... Cyprus just isn't the land of opportunity, if you know what I mean.

Where did you see the statistics that put Cyprus and London at the same level of cost of living? :? Retirees don't want a mansion with 4 bedrooms. They want good weather and lots of sunshine. Thats why the people of the north states of USA retire to Florida. Have you heard of many retiring to Canada?

CYPRUS is leading the race for the most expensive destination for foreigners, DISY Vice Chairman Averoff Neophytou charged yesterday, warning that if measures were not taken soon, the island could get into troubled waters in its tourism industry.

Commenting on a recent study conducted by British insurance company Prudential UK, Neophytou said Cyprus was one of the top hot spots for British people wanting to retire abroad. Apart from Cyprus, Canada, Australia, France, Jamaica, Italy, the United States, Spain, New Zealand and South Africa are destinations preferred by British people wanting to retire.
“As far as expenses go in relation to the 10 countries, we are unfortunately at the top of the list when it comes to being the most expensive destination. It appears that Cypriots pay twice as much as an American when it comes to daily expenses,” said Neophytou.
Calling on the government to solve the problem, Neophytou said: “They have to stop being indifferent to the citizens of Cyprus, to understand that these high prices are eating away at the Cypriot citizen’s income while we are also worried that the current situation will have a massively negative effect on the future.”

According to Prudential, South Africa is the cheapest retirement getaway for the retiring classes, offering a cost of living 38.5 per cent more affordable than Britain and 54 per cent more affordable than Cyprus, which they state is the most expensive place for British people looking to retire abroad.

The research was based on a shopping basket of 10 common weekly goods that includes a litre of milk, a loaf of bread, a medium jar of instant coffee, a kilo bag of sugar, 500g of cheese, six eggs, a standard bar of milk chocolate, a lettuce, a kilo of apples and a whole fresh chicken. It revealed that a South African resident would have to spend a mere £9 whereas British residents fork out £15. Residents in Cyprus, however, would have to cough up £20.

You'd be surprised at how many British people are avoiding Cyprus like a wildfire. There are more British people that retire in Canada than here.

When I came here two years ago I thought it will be ok. I think I'm starting to have enough of this island. 8)
I cannot say it's not a nice place, or that there are no nice people here (there are also bad people, as all over the world). But everything is fine only when you have money. 8)

So where is the comparison between Cyprus and London? What you show just compares some supermarket items not things like rent, medical expenses and everything else that makes the cost of living.

Here is another article from yesterday: http://www.financialmirror.com/more_new ... 31&type=st
