Today is the 24th anniversary of the death of the former Turkish Cypriot leader Doctor Fazil Kucuk who fought for the freedom of his people.Commemorative events in the Republic started at 10.15 am today at the former leader’s monument at Anit Tepe where wreaths were laid.At exactly at 10.28 the time when Dr Fazil Kucuk closed his eyes to the world, a minutes silence was observed in his memory.Several commemorative ceremonies are taking place throughout the Republic marking the 24th anniversary of Dr Kucuk’s death.
had been the leader of the Turkish Cypriot people during the British colonial years, the 1960 Cyprus Republic and the national struggle which followed, the President said that Dr Kucuk and his colleagues created unity among the Turkish Cypriot people, eventually establishing the state.
President Talat said that the Turkish Cypriot people were still waging a great struggle which was for the Turkish Cypriot State to accomplish political equality with the Greek Cypriot state in all forms.
