The day after.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Pyrpolizer » Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:11 pm

Your curiosity is killing you Deniz. OK here's the story: The TC police is doing a campaign recently against prostitution. The 2 GCs were among others who got arrested, obviously "in action". I don't know what the charges were but the TC judge used a Euro calculator to find out how much the usual 2000 CYP guarantee they should sign to appear in Court at a later stage was. And... voila, 3400 Euros he said!!!

Thanks Pyro, helpful as ever.

I read the report in the Cyprus Mail where they said no further details were given or withheld or something like that. Thats a positive sign then that the TC authorities were trying to save the blushes of the 'male' species. I havent read the TC press yet. Prostitution was legal once , whats their problem now. Expecting people to tie a knot in it?

Don't worry Deniz, this is just the way of the police saying they want higher commissions...

Another possibility is that the cabarets in question broke the rule of getting police protection.

This is one of the few things we (the GCs) cannot accuse the TCs. We follow exactly the same practices in Cyprus, and the state itself and the police is behind everything. What a hypocrisy!

Pyro and Deniz

Just reading through the thread and started to crack up, poor GC fellows just chose the wrong day. In the north prostitution is illegal "on paper" but the gov. even collects VAT from the pimps. From time to time the police raid cabarets some of the bigger ones usually get word of when its going to happen and take precautions.

When it comes to what I expect on the day after, we live in the Morphou area and the house we live in belongs to a GC, however when we took possession of the house it was uncompleted. We finished the ground floor which didn't even have a front door, the hallway of the house was completely open to the road and my grandparents lived in it like this for over 20 years. My grandfather always lived with the hope that he would go back to his original village ( Episkopi ) and therefore never even closed off the wall of the house or even put in a front door. After my grandfather died my grandmother closed up the wall and finally put in a front door. After my family moved to Cyprus from Australia we finished off the house we built a 60 sq metre shop downstairs and built another 220 square meter house on top. In any settlement all TC's know that the Morphou area is going to be given back completely so there hasn't been a lot of construction in the area. If a settlement was reached we would be happy to move out, if we just had a roof over our heads soewhere. 1974 was a time of "Ganimet" ( spoils of war ) for many TC's many people who owned very little or jack shit were given orange fields, houses and etc. The TC's who couldn't claim anything left the island ( like my family) while many enjoyed the spoils of war. GC's complain a lot about human rights violations and so on, some TC's got it worse than you guys did imagine having to work for some snob (who had jackshit) you used to employ in your fields in the south.

As my grandma says "Boklar tabağa girdi" ( "Shit found itself in a plate")

Umit thanks for sharing your story with us. You have obviously put a lot of effort, time and money into this home and I hoe that the legal owner will decide to take compensation for it and it can remain your family's home. Otherwise I would hope that the day after a unification you will be given compensation for your moneys spent on completing the home as well as aditional moneys to build your own home either at Episkopi or this is where the church can play a role in giving you a plot of land in the north to build a home.

Life goes on regardless of the status quo and the lack of a solution, people adapt and have built their lives out of conflict and strife. 45 years have passed and we have a settled life would be a shame to disrupt it all over again, imo ample compensation should be paid to previous owners.

Its not a settled life VP. I know a lot of people like Umit and others 'sitting on' GC property and waiting for the day they will be kicked out again. I can not call that 'settled'. Most will not say so openly, but they do feel uneasy. Its Damocles' Sword.

Whats happening in the Morphou area now is that the gov. is trying to direct investment towards the Kalkanlı (Kapouti) area the land here is GC owned but its all fields and the area was within the TC state boundries in the Annan plan, there has also been a major investment in the area The Middle East Technical Uni. opened a campus there and has spent close to 100 million dolars so far. They even changed the route of the new highway that is being built to Morphou then when people started to complain they decided to build to routes. At the moment they are building two routes one to Morphou and another direct to Kalkanlı ( Kapouti ). In a few years time there will be an entirely new town in the area. You can see that people are in a way getting ready for a settlement many people in Morphou have built houses in nicosia as well. We even bury our dead in the nicosia cemetery.

Humanist, when it come to the church giving land for TC's to build new houses I think its just propoganda, the church would be the last place to help TC's. I think the church would even stir up trouble between TC's and GC's.

We occasionally visit Piskobu ( Episkopi ) and sometimes visit the people living in grandma's house, when talking with them I get the feeling they don't want to leave, which is totally normal. The first time we went they looked a bit worried before we left, my uncle turned to them and told them it was their house now and they started to cry. I really like the old family village ( it's way better than Morphou) but we wouldn't feel comfortable living their after a settlement.
