Driving License!

Postby Cyprus4MeSoon » Sat Jan 12, 2008 4:35 pm

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me out please. We are coming over to Cyprus on the 21st to check on how our house is getting on.

We are staying with my sister, who has said that we can have the use of her car for the week, and that I can be put on her insurance (max 1 month) to drive legally in Cyprus. My problem is, that my sister has said that the Insurance company need to see my original paper license. (I have a Photocard License that I carry with me) This would be OK, other than I cannot find the thing!!!!!! Searched high and low, and I assure you that I am a person that keeps everything in its place :D ...but still cannot find it, (no doubt put it somewhere safe!!)

Can anyone tell me if she has it wrong and that the Photocard one will be sufficient
Many thanks
Wendie :)

Most insurers will want to see the paper part to insure you with your own car as it's the bit that holds the details of convictions and points ~ you might have got away it a few years ago but not now.

BUT ~~~ I borrowed a friends car for a few weeks last June after mine was stolen and when my son came over last August that same friend gave my son his car to use ~ all the insurance company wanted to see if they were adding me or my son to someones existing policy was the plastic bit and a passport and kept photocopies of both ~~ they said that they only needed the paper part plus a letter of no claims entitlement in if I was actually insuring my personal car with them.

Sadly if your sisters insurance wants to see the paper bit I don't think there's a lot you can do about it but I would get her to check again that particular person in the insurance office is not thinking about a Cyprus licence which is effectively a paper one .

It seems strange that you can hire a car with only the plastic bit of a licence and yet some insurers it seems insist on seeing the paper bit as well just to add you on to someone else's policy

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your response. I will check with my sister...or her to check with the insurers. I must admit that I thought in this instance that the Photocard would be sufficient.. BUT I will have to obviously find it for when we move over to Cyprus and Insure our own car. I know it must be here somewhere  it just is not coming to me yet
Thanks again

Hi Wendie

Don't forget to get proof of your no claims discount from your UK insurers as you can use that to prove you have been a good girl when you eventually insure your own car in Cyprus .

Thank you Bill, I will most certainly get proof of my no claims bonus :D as I have been a really good girl for the last 14 years that I have been driving....lets hope that remains the same
Thanks again
