Keeping up with the Jones's

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

pantheman please go back and read the entire thread from the beginning. We are talking about how materialistic some people have become and how they are burdoning themselves with debt to live fake lifestyles. That people are judged by the material possessions that they have. We are referring to the fact that the sane ones are now outnumbered.................... Do I need to go on....

Hi JoJo.
I thought that I had misunderstood the thread and read it again, I agree with you, there are massive problems everywhere. And the you know what is getting ready to hit the fan.

I suggest you all read a book by Alain de Botton called "Status Anxiety".

It covers all these issues in depth and is a thoroughly interesting read.

The bad patch we are going through has made me realise what really matters. To be warm , safe, well fed and above all happy.

Ever heard of this:

So all you need to cover the base is to breath, eat, drink, sleep, have sex and a couple of unknown words! ;)

Scenario .
Buying a new car from a dealer .

Walked into a Mitsubishi showroom last June wanting to buy a new car after having my previous one stolen ~ tried unsuccessfully to attract the attention of a salesman so I asked one of the girls sat at a desk exactly what I have to do to get some attention ~ she phoned a salesman who never turned up and then eventually said "I'll get someone please wait " ~ after waiting for 20 mins she hadn't returned ~ there were other salesmen around but they all said they were to busy so I left after just under an hour of waiting.

I recounted the story to my wife on returning home and she said " What do you expect if you go looking at cars dressed in shorts / tea shirt / sandals and driving your friends 15 year old car ~ of course nobody will take you seriously" .

A couple of days later I went to the same place dressed in some nice clothes and the salesman was over me like a bad rash ~ because I'm a bit of a bastard I told the salesman that if he had treated me the same when I visited two days previously when I wasn't dressed as well he might have got my business ~ I told him that I was going to buy from the Mazda dealers as they had treated me in a very courteous manner and deserved my money ~ what a surprise when he walked off after giving me a dirty look

I went to the Mazda showroom on same day as I visited the Mitsubishi dealer in the same shorts and tea shirt and was treated very well ~ given a drink ~ taken for a test drive and fussed over by the manager ~ nothing was to much trouble for him and to top it off negotiated a reasonable discount ~ I was in there for over one hour and had his constant attention ~ so not everybody is the same but unfortunately most Cypriots class you by the clothes you wear or the house you live in as to how successful you are in life.

As I said previously this status thing is one of my pet hates about living in Cyprus

As you can guess the Mazda manager got my money he deserved it and I must admit I'm very happy with the car too ~~ especially at the price I paid ~ such a pity that my relatives don't take me seriously now.

Bill ~ a bit dyslexic ~ went to the Mazda dealer instead of the Merc dealer

The point is as I understand it, person A buys a brand spanking new sports car say, his neighbour person B likes what he sees, Person A earns more than person B . So Person B goes and gets a loan to buy a car which is even better than person A. Gets into heavy debt and bingo financial chaos.

As we to the best of my knowledge have never met , how do you know what I did with my money, as it happens we did a lot for charity, mainly childrens charities in Cyprus both with time and money. I have to say that the people who worked hard were mainly the expats, perhaps the Cypriots were too busy or had other things on thier minds.

Please do not judge me, you do not know me.

Seems to me you just don't like cypriots.

BooHoo, if you haven't already gone then far from me to stop you. Bye Bye. Oh and take your money with you.

I get sick of hearing from people like you how you come here with all you money and that we should all be grateful to you. You chose to come to this country, if it doesn't suit you and the cypriots get up your nose then just sod off.

As for reading this thread, Yes i chose to, but good lord what cry babies the pair of you.
