Hi. I was just making a generalisation but also the situation here in Cyprus. My husband received a msn message yesterday from one one his realtives from OZ and all his cousin wrote was: I now have a 42" HD TV. No hi how are you etc. etc. My husband replied and said thats great how did you afford it, and he replied " I just whacked it on the credit card". Again my husband replied thats great and he said he had to go and tell everyone about it. He was boasting about it for 2 days and the funny thing is he has not really watched anything yet because he is to busy spreading the news. Majority of our friends in OZ have decalred bankrupt and some are starting to lose thier homes.
The situation here in Cyprus, I believe, is changing too quickly. I know that it is not meant to be how it was years ago, but it had gone to the other end of the scale and I do not think that people can handle it. My husband and I work 7 days, so we do not get out much lol (which I think is a good thing for the moment). Over the xmas/new year we ended up going to 2 family functions, and we did not have anything in common with anyone. Both the men and woman were comparing watches, phones, cars etc etc. We sat there like mutes. The thing is that nearly everyone is in debt and killing themselves to acquire these things. It never used to be so pretencious like this here before. Our village has so many Mercs now that the status quo is that you have made it in life if you have one. But at the end of the day, the majority of people are miserable because they can not afford these extravagent lifestyles. Back in OZ they say that people think that they a financially secure enough to live the Paris Hilton lifestyle.
Two weeks ago, my husband and I went to Nicosia shopping, and we went into 1 of the shops in the mall and we were followed by 10 security in the shop from the moment we stepped our foot inside until the moment we left. We went 2 days ago, but we were left alone and we were not followed. Why? The 1st time we went in track suit pants, and the second time we thought we would wear and Sunday best. What a shock we got when we were dressed in the latter. We must have looked like paupers and thieves in our trakkies and we were also ignored and spoken to rudely. What a fake society we live in if we are judged by what we wear.
Sorry for the verbal diarrheia I could go on forever, but it just seems that people have lost sight of the things that matter in life. People are forgetting their manners and basic respect for other people. The other day I went to the hospital to get medicine for my grandmother. All the chairs were taken and there was a little old lady who was too weak to stand, and no one would get off their backsides to let her sit down. I walked into one of the rooms and took a chair a put it in the middle of the coridoor for her to sit and people were just staring at me as if I was the stupid one. I don't know these days. I am not trying to make myself to be a saint, but it just seems that people do not care about anyone else these days, and are just in it for themeselves and the material possessions they are trying to acquire. Money makes the world go round, but it does not us happy. In fact, it seems to be making people more and more miserable. Ok, that is enough out of me for now.
Has anyone seen the movie I am Sam. The most powerful movie I have ever seen.
We also see things in the shop that we can not comprehend. We had a couple of people buy psp's for 3 year old children. That's nuts. Just last week 5 customers went and bought new Mercs, and we are frowned upon beacuse we own a Honda. Afterall, we are from Australia and some people thinh that we sh*t money. Sorry for the expression. We are also next door to a hairdressers, beautician. Boy, are we in the wrong business. Some woman spend £90 a week. Then they come into our shop a whinge for a few measely £££'s.
