Cyprus eyes Greece’s water to slake thirst
Cyprus may seek to import drinking water from Greece and other countries in the region as it has only enough reserves to last another two months, the Cypriot agriculture minister said yesterday.

Nicosia has asked authorities in Greece, as well as Lebanon and Egypt, to send over water in tankers, Fotis Fotiou said.

Cyprus, which has suffered from drought for years, had considered importing water seven years ago but decided not to because of the high cost.

The operation of desalination plants on the island had eased the problem – and a third plant is due to open in June – but the situation is now critical, authorities say. “We rationed water for farmers; we might have to do the same for households,” Fotiou said. Reservoirs on Cyprus are reportedly less than 10 percent full.

Why not from Turkey?

This is a fantastic opportunity to cooperate on a project that will benefit the whole of Cyprus and furthermore initiate a process of positive dealings instead of the fruitless polemics of the last 45 years.

Lets bring water from Turkey!

WTF are you saying Bananiot? You want us to depend on Turkey for the most important thing of our lives? I remember some years ago when the Turks were threatening Syria to cut the flow of the rivers to them!! What we should do is just build more desalination plants and depend on nobody.

Perhaps if the whole population of Cyprus stopped washing down the outside of their houses twice a day and cars were only washed once a month we would still have some water left in the dams ~ also if no pools were topped up with tap water and watering the garden was banned we would have even more water in the dams ~ or the government would get their act together and motivate the police into actively prosecuting those wasting water ~ sadly that's never going to happen.

Can you imagine telling mr & mrs tourist that he can't flush the toilet when they are on their holidays this summer ~ unless there's substantial rain in the next couple of months that could happen and the tourist industry will be finished ~ and that will be economic suicide for Cyprus.

A lot vowed never to return in 1998 when the dams were in a similar state ~ cyprus is getting expensive as a tourist location ~ tourist numbers are falling ~ having no water would be the last straw ~ there are better and cheaper places to go in the med area and most of those HAVE WATER .

We had a similar thread in the past and Devil, who served as an environmental engineer with the UN, listed a series of measures for water management and conservation that would solve the problem. Bringing in water from anywhere is not a long term solution. The water in Turkey and Lebanon and other places will also be in short supply at som point in the future.

I made this proposition last year, and that was, any house which is half an hour's drive from the beach where swimming is possible, should not be able to fill their swimming pools or build any new ones in the future, regardless whether you have your own Well or not. That water belongs to everyone. People will fly for hours to get to Cypriot beaches and the Cypriots themselves are not willing to drive half an hour.??

It took us much longer when we were kids, tell you that much.

The government just announced some initial measures:

1) Each person is allowed to drink up to half litter of water or any water based liquid per day.
2) No more than a 2 minute shower every month
3) Toilets should be flashed only when totally filled
4) Spitting is prohibited. If you have any extra liquids that you do not need you should donate them to the relevant government agencies.
