The area around Limassol seems to be full of these very long, black snakes, which are totally harmless. I am very fond of them, actually.

I know that the whip snake will eat young vipers ~ not so sure about the adults though ~ sadly most Cypriots will kill all snakes no matter whether they are harmless or not .

There are mosquitoes in Cyprus, present mostly in the summer months however few are left over for the winter season. This however is not really a problem. There are many mosquito-prevention tools in supermarkets, I personally like the liquid which is in a pot and gives an aroma out. :-)

Another problem are these big bees commonly referred to in Greek as "sfikes". These things are huge flies with a red tail. If anybody can think of the English name I would be most grateful. Anyway, if you see one run but let me warn you they can probably run faster than you. There is another kind of fly that looks similar to the sfika but has a long tail with a black dot. The main thing to remember is not to pick on them. Especially the sfika because it can repeatedly bite you.

In terms of snakes, if their black their good, if their red run. The red ones are venomous. The black ones might hit you out of fear if you step on them. The reason I say they are good is because they are known to eat mice.

That helps me go to my next point. During the winter months we have a problem with mice, even though people like to deny they had a problem with the critters they're probably lying. Mice can easily get in your house and mass multiply. They can cause furniture damage and are known to spread illness and disease. It's always best to have a cat present to prevent them from spreading. There are many anti-mice preventing tools in the supermarket. A common way of killing a mouse is to trap it them pour boiling water (preferably from a kettle) until it dies, which should be less than a minute.

The biggest problem of concern for me are dogs, I hate them, especially the ones who are loose. Unfortunately most ignorant owners have their dogs patrolling government pavements. If you fancy a midnight stroll you have now been warned.

Spiders, I think there is one poisonous spider, apparently it's not fury just red and you should kill it without second thought.

That's about it I think, if anybody has more dangerous insects in the small island to consider please do tell.

 Too many mosquitos for my liking and boy do they love me!!! Every year they track me down and bite me to death - not literally obviously!! Thing is I never hear them either yet they are quite noisy little beggars by all accounts!! Am I right in thinking that they are getting bigger too? :?

I do use a repellent which is quite effective but they still catch me off guard and feed vigorously!!

Will be waiting for them soon - had some rain last week which means many eggs will hatch and out they come................................ :x

Been here for 6 years and only ever seen one snake - non-poisonous! :D

I saw two of those snakes making love, it looks weird. Normally they would slither away once seeing us but they remained there doing their business. They did it on our land too. :-)

What a terrible climax to a love story ~ getting your head beaten in when he's on the short strokes.

Now that's cruel ~ very cruel
