RIOT police used batons to disperse youths throwing rocks last night after a protest at a British military base in Cyprus turned violent.
Scores of Greek Cypriots chanted "Nazis out of Cyprus" during the incident at RAF Akrotiri, which is a vital staging and supply post for British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was the most violent demonstration against the British military presence on the former colony since 2001 when riots left more than 40 people injured and caused £300,000 worth of damage.
Captain Nick Ulvert, a spokesman for the British military, told The Scotsman that some protesters had hurled "rocks the size of footballs" at the police line.
British forces were not involved in the scuffles outside RAF Akrotiri's perimeter fence.
