XP64 bit

Postby Sega » Sun Jan 06, 2008 7:04 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to find a solution to my problem but I am stuck. Basically I recently bought a quad-core 3GhZ CPU with well over 4GB of RAM.

Due to the amount of RAM the system came with XP-64-bit. As far as I am aware this OS allows XP to detect more than 4GB of RAM, which is probably why the system came with it in as standard. It has the added advantage of processing faster.

After talking to many tech-experts they advised me that many programs do not run on XP64 bit.

I installed programs on the 64bit OS and as I was told some programs just did not work. These programs were mainly to do with networks, for instance firewalls, antivirus, certain drivers. But surprisingly design and page layout programs installed and functioned fine. Also as a result of the amount of RAM (well well over 4GB) I was told that gaming might be a problem, since XP32-bit only recognises 4GB of RAM it might be useful to install games on this OS.

I thought I would be clever, so I installed both OS's XP64 and XP32, created a shortcut on the desktop on both OS's which would be linked to a location on the HD with the the other shortcuts (normally found on Start). Subsequently the start menu was now bare on both OS. But as you can guess installing a program on one OS does not necessary mean it will work on another.

Can anybody advice me what to do?

Do I really need two OS's?
Would gaming be effected due to the RAM size?
Does anybody else have experience with XP64-bit.
Do most programs work on this OS?
XP64 or XP32?

Any comments would be appreciated.

The system was a refurbished machine, it came with XP-32 preinstalled and XP-64 CD. XP-64 was not installed on the machine, I had to manually put this on.

You should ask these questions in forums that deal with this sort of things like this http://forums.anandtech.com/

i run 64bit rendering farm. I tried few games here such as ARMA with GF8800GTS, worked fine...
Its not a problem to run games, for some games just disable 2 or more cores from Task Manager. (Set Affinity)
I have a problem running some of my old networking tools on 64bit but i found alternatives.

There is not much of software designed on user level software market which uses >4Gb ram and >4 cores... i use some software which takes advantage of all cores and as much ram as you have.

Your spot on. I ran a few games on it, and I had no problem.

Like you said, the only problems I have so far experienced are specifically with networking things. I had to swap the firewall I used. I also needed to change my antivirus.

Thanks for the link. Ideally I should have used a different forum like the one you specified and in future I will probably do that. I have however found many knowledgeable people on this forum like "raymanoff/raymanuva" who have exceptional knowledge in many areas.

You've probably noticed that the threads I start have to do with faults I may encounter through normal life. Many people here start threads to do with the Cyprus problem. I somewhat get tired of such discussions and it might be useful for this forum to start other sections (e.g. computing, cooking).

:? Do not know much about computers - though I would be interested in the cooking thread. You gonna start it off? :) :)
