Are Dells any good does anyone know? If I put another HDD in a Dell, a SATA drive, will it invalidate the warranty??

Yes, if you buy a made PC like Dell as soon as you open the case up the warrenty becomes void.

I have both a dell tower system ( still in the UK ) and laptop and neither has any seals on the case so they wouldn't know you have been adding parts as long as it's returned to it's original state if you have to send it back .

After years of building pc's for myself ~ my kids and work colleagues I eventually bought a dell ~~ good components ~ excellent standard of build ~ all software pre installed / switch on and go ~ all for virtually the same price as I would have paid for the parts if I built it myself.

I'm very happy with my dells but if I bought a laptop again it would be a Acer

I've heard of Lenovo ~ a major Chinese player in pc manufacture ~~ never used one though.

IBM is Lenovo, whatever you do, kept away from AMD.

It all depends what you require the system for. For laptops the makes to consider are Sony, Acer and Toshiba, however recently Acer has a very been given excellent reputation for durability. I would not mind the Sony TZ however, apparently it has 7 hours battery life.

I have recently purchases a workstation and because of price I chose Dell. With regards to what was said about the warranty, I feel the somebody has mislead you. In fact if you own a Dell workstation machine in the UK if you ring technical help with a hardware error, the first thing they get you to do is open it up. I have however had experience in dealing with a Dell re-seller in Cyprus. Let me educate you in telling you that DELL does not exist as of yet in Cyprus. A reseller is a person or company who sells for Dell, not Dell it's self.

I'm very happy with my dells but if I bought a laptop again it would be a Acer

Agreed.

I also own a Dell laptop; if I were to purchase a laptop again I would have to go for the Sony TZ. The basis on my decision is the long-life battery, solid-state HD, size, weight and build quality. Acer are probably the best laptops on the market, I like the Ferrari ones, but Sony wins for me.

IBM is Lenovo, whatever you do, kept away from AMD.

This is also correct. Currently Intel based CPU are leading the way in technology. The best CPU tend to have more cores, I believe currently the fastest CPU with the highest amount of cores is around 8-cores and as you can guess it is Intel-based.

With regards to purchasing a system made up my components instead of buying a "real make" it would be best if you never did this again. My brother did this a couple of years back and they guy left a screw inside which eventually burned the motherboard out. I feel your more secure from a proper manufacturer as oppose to some self-proclaimed computer guru who attempts to build computer for a living.

ah, i obviously made a mistake, my Dell PC which i have opened many times doesn't have a tag or anything inside to prove the warrenty was void anyway, i just thought that premade PC's voided warrenty if you opened them..

My mistake

My one popped early this morning, a loud bang. Changed the power supply on it, but still can't get it to work. Anyone fancy taking a look to see if they can sort it out for me? I have a feeling its taken out the Motherboard and Graphics card, though need confirmation of that if possible.

Cheers.

Many PC that came in for repairs in our shop with almost the same sort of fault description you gave above were a total "write off". Those who were lucky the PSU only took the graphics card or the MB with it but the unlucky ones had everything blown up inside, the MB, graphics card, RAM, CPU and even the HD. Funny enough though, the floppy disk almost always survived, don't ask me why.

The only way you are going to confirm if your MB is gone is to disconnect the HD, CD and floppy if you have one that is, and replace the RAM, CPU and graphics card one after the other and if after replacing all parts the MB still doesn't fire up then your MB is dead. Similarly, if you want to check the rest of the parts you will have to buy an MB and try everything again one by one but that means that you will have to buy each component to be able to try out the components from your old PC.

Unless you find someone who has the parts for you try listen to the others and get a new PC, it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper.
