Problem at British Base RAF Akrotiri

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Demonstrators opposed to the British presence on Cyprus threw fireworks and stones at police in riot gear on Friday at the entrance to a British military base on the island, witnesses said.

"There was a police contingent which pushed the demonstrators back," a witness told Reuters after the scuffle involving about 120 demonstrators at RAF Akrotiri, a sprawling base on the southern tip of Cyprus.

No injuries or arrests were reported.

In a separate incident, a bomb disposal expert carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package found close to another military base. The package was a bag of rubbish, a British bases spokesman said.

Heavily guarded RAF Akrotiri is in one of two Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) that Britain has maintained in Cyprus since giving the eastern Mediterranean colony independence in 1960.

There were riots in the area in 2001 when local people protested against British plans to install antenna masts they feared would pose a risk to public health.

The group of students that staged the protest are called "Britain Reconsider" and they have issues with British Foreign policy on Cyprus and therefore demand the immediate closure of Bases on the island that are controlled by Britain.

is there a slight chance RAF could be closed down? If yes, then on which grounds?

We are giving the British an excuse to fuck us up yet one more time. They can very easily throw a spanner in the works now and say they are going to be "fair minded" and cede half of the Dekhelia base to the TCs and half to the GCs.

Akrotiri will not be released, it is too valuable to the Americans, as is the Troodos radar. Do not ever underestimate the vindicitiveness of Britain. They will never forgive the fact that 200 EOKA peasant boys beat 45000 British soldiers. We will be paying for that for many years to come.

They were extreme right wing thugs of a student organisation known as Kes-Drasis who are also members of "Chrysi Avgi". They are the same gangsters that demonstrated against the opening of Ledra Street. They carried around 20 Greek flags and not a single Cyprus flag.

200 EOKA peasants beat 45000 British soldiers! Do you really believe this Nikitas? Gosh, they did better than Leonidas at Thermopylai.

Oh leave Bananiot. Who takes him seriously anyway? He's against anything for the good of our people and is quite predictable now.
