Cyprus president hopes for solution for divided island in 2008
www.chinaview.cn 2007-12-31 23:22:41 Print
NICOSIA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos on Monday expressed his hope that a functional and viable solution could be worked out in 2008 for the divided Mediterranean island.

In his New Year message, Papadopoulos said, "We look forward, with faith and optimism, to ensuring peace and safety in our divided country through a truly viable and functional solution to our national problem that will reunite our people and our land."

"We hope that in the year 2008, such a solution will become a reality and a permanent situation for the benefit of the entire people of Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots," said the president.

He vowed to work hard in a constructive spirit for such a solution.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 when Turkey militarily intervened and occupied the north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers who pushed for union with Greece.

For several decades, the United Nations has continuously worked to persuade Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities to find a viable solution.

But in a referendum held in April 2004, Greek Cypriots rejected a settlement plan by then U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan because it would not meet their aspiration for the island's reunification, while Turkish Cypriots approved it.

If he means it.....And I doubt very much he does.....Is he know going against the likes of Pirtis, GR, Phoenix and Kifeas. After all...He says he is going to work for all the people in Cyprus and not just the GCs as he has done so far......Goes against what all the above have been saying if he is now changing his tune doesn't it??? I for one hope it's true but it is too close to the elections for my liking

Imagine this senario:

Tassos Papodopoulos cancels the upcoming presidential election because he says it is unconstitutional...Instead he announces an election strictly according to the 1960 constitution...

That is all Cyprus citizens of GC background will vote for a President and all Cyprus citizens with a TC background will vote for a Vice-president. There will also be parliamentary elections to elect a new house with GC and TC representatives as allowed for in the Cyprus Republic constitution...The election will be held 6 months from the date of announcement to allow Cypriots to register on electoral rolls wherever they happen to live in the world...All Cypriots in the diaspora will be allowed to vote and to stand for political office...A new National Unity government will be formed after the election to oversee the normalisation
of the relationship between the two communities...

Now... imagine the politial and international ramifications of such a move...and imagine how long it might take to find " a truly viable and functional solution...that will reunite our people and our land" after such a senario comes to pass?????

Is this solution just too simple to be considered by our leaders? or is it me who is a simpleton??? :? :? :?

what a fantasy, Dr. ; too much zevania for you at your holiday table, or perhaps, too little for TPap at his.

...yes, I agree entirely, the start is 1960 and the only legal Constitution that existed. You will note Birki, that my propasal upholds the principals of our foundation as a State, modernising it if you will, with the elimination of the Communal Chamber and its replacement instead by two mutually exclusive National Assemblies, adding to it the Bizonal component, by adding enclaves (dividing the island into two parts from many pieces), allowing for the jurisdiction over territory by an ethnic majority independantly so that they can sustain themselves, ending the conflict that erupted over municipalities, obliging both societies to recognise and respect their own respective minorities within their Communal state.

As for the legislature of the Republic, I hope for a Bicameral reformation so that a Lower House will represent by population, electing candidates as independants , perhaps with regional Party support, to secure for the citizen the Government's transparency having seats at all Government Committees, and an Upper House where the President wins his leadership (with a counterpart, the Vice President), whether Turcophone or Grecophone because he/she has won, as the leader of a Party a majority of seats, where every elector has two votes for this Chamber, voting from two slates for the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot representatives that suit them best.

What is simlpe Dr.B, is the position the so called Leaders have taken which allows them to remain in stagnation as adversaries.

In an ideal world, yes he does make sense. ( Is Dr. B = BK?). But the demography has changed so much, he may be a bit too optimistic with the suggestions he made, as the GCs would turn it down straight away.

"Where do we start?" you ask. First you have to have the will. Neither side has the will. Neither leader wishes to sell their people down the drain, so we have an impasse.
