CYPRIOTNESS HAD TO BE DESTROYED.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

though i didnt witnessed what has been discussed but as i am part of this community now i will say that rift hatered just takes u away from eachother.why cant we all co-exist in this world why we always wants things to be done our ways.greek and turkish cypriots have suffered a lot i still see old mothers wearing black dress mourning their loss.dont u think their loss is our loss as well if another conflict comes up(may GOD NEVER let this happen again) may be our wives or mothers will be the one wearing these black dresses(sorry for my ignorance dont know how turkish cypriots are mourning so cant mention that).why not to prevent anything coming like this or even to make up for what happened regardless of whoever was at mistake lets move forward and for greater cyprus.all over the world things are changing why we still have to live under the shadow of united nations.i feel pity for citizens of cyprus when we have to stop at one checkpost.i think we can do better than this.hope i havent offended anyone with my lack of knowledge.

I must protest your remark bilako22, there are so many people who still uphold the traditions of Cypriotness, the problem lies in the fact that they are not engaged in politics, they are too honest for such a profession.

Sadly iceman, I am inclined to agree with you, the only consolation we have lies in the fact that we recognize that fact, I take it that you are a Cypriot, if so, do not give up hope, it remains as long as there is life.

Yes i am a Cypriot....Turkish Cypriot....from the youngest generation of Cypriots who have any experience of "ONE" Cyprus...what do you think will happen to Cypriotness when our generation dies out?? Our children, born in divided Cyprus do not know the difference.
I believe this was a part of the big plan to divide & permanantly separate the island...After one or maybe two generations there won't be any need for a unification because the people on both sides of the divide will be totally strangers to each other..

Some people wrongly consider "Cypriotness" as something incompatible with "Greekness" or "Turkishness".

While forcing everybody to be just Cypriot would work (something like what Ataturk did for Turkey) the ideal way would be to have our "Cypriotness" but also not to erase our "Greekness", "Turkishness" and everything else that makes Cypriots who they are. If we did force "just Cypriotness" then we would end up with some "Cypriotness" but not the real original one, since the real "Cypriotness" has everything to do with "Greekness" for 1000s of years, the "Turkishness" (especially for the TCs, but not exclusively) and the effects that many others had on the culture of our island.

The ideal would be to accept what we are, accept what other Cypriots are, and show respect to all without any racist, religious or other kind of discriminations. If we do that then we would all be proud Cypriots without erasing our history. The closest model to this is the USA, where they have tons of different cultures and religions, they can all call themselves "African American", "Irish American", "Italian Amrican" etc, but they are all American citizens.

Of course thats the ideal. When interests of foreign powers, fear and greed enters the equation then the ideal becomes difficult or even impossible. Personally I unfortunately don't see a real unification of our country possible without a shift in the balance of power and possibly more bloodshed.

But Iceman, how can you possibly say all that, if the experience of one Cyprus for the TC community was one of fear, discrimination, persecution, murder and annihilation against itself, by the GCs?

Weren’t the GCs in the business of annihilating the TCs from 1963 up until 1974, when Turkey was forced to make a peace operation to save them, and this resulted in the present situation in which Cyprus is divided so that the TCs can have a safe heaven in the north, away from the murderous GCs? Isn’t this the official TC /Turkish thesis, as well as that of Bananiot and some other British ones in this forum?

I as a GC am now also fully convinced that this was indeed the situation during a one Cyprus period -having heard the same thing over and over again by the Turkish sources and the vast majority of TCs and Bananiot in this forum, that I now believe a one Cyprus is not the right thing to strive for, because it is not fair and potentially dangerous for the TC community, and I believe permanent recognized partition is the most sensible solution! Are you now telling me that this is not the case?
