I have been living in Greece for over 30 years and never heard this claim, not even once. The only people who say it are Turks. Can you quote any Greek claiming Istanbul? You guys have an obsession with this nonsense.

If you leave out Ayia Sophia, what is so great about Istanbul anyway? A city designed for half a million now housing 14 million. Sounds like other unlucky places around the world, like Mexico City, Cairo, Calcutta. Who wants that!

Nikitas , I have come across many Greeks who insist on calling it Constantinople and dream of the day when it will be returned to the people that had lived there for thousands of years before being taken by the barbarians.

All Greek speakers call it Constantinoupolis. It sounds odd to use the word Istanbul, even though it is more Greek (a corrption of Is tin Poli) than Constantinople which is half Latin.

I do not know what kind of Greeks you spoke with. but in he 30 years I have been here I have not come across any of them. Once the Archbishop used a phrase from an old poem about returning to Istanbul and all the Media crapped on him. The island of Imia is far more important and newsowrthy than the retaking of Istanbul. So do not worry, no need to post guards around Topkapi yet.
