Cyprus Today article

Postby erolz » Fri Mar 25, 2005 2:40 am

Below is a link to an article in this weeks Cyprus Today (english language newspaper in the North)

Undoubdetly it will upset some GC - I did not write it, I have merely scanned it and made it available to those here - so don't shoot the messanger.

The paragraph below in an extract from the above article, published in the Cyprus Today Newspaper.

Code: Select all
The DNA of Greek-Speaking Cypriots is closer to the DNA of Turkish-Speaking Cypriots…... just as the DNA of Turkish –Speaking Cypriots is less similar to mainland Turks than their neighbors in the South.

What???
How could the author make such an outrageous claim, especially in a “TRNC” newspaper??
Doesn’t she know that the official policy of Denktash and the TC leadership is that in Cyprus there are two nationalities, i.e. two separate people? Is she serving GC propaganda claims?

Kifeas, you missed the part about the Turkish Cypriot minority.

Those people don't care about our problem. What they care about is their problem which is that they bought stolen land and now they are trying to keep it.

No piratis, I didn't miss anything! I suspect what the real motives behind writing this article, are. What I point is, given the motives, how did she make such a mistake and wrote the above paragraph, which by the way is probably the only objectively truthful claim in the whole article.

The title is "we are talking Cypriots, not Greeks". So since this is Cyprus, and we are not Greeks but Cypriots, she had to make a similar claim for TCs, otherwise it would seem that TCs are less Cypriots than us.

I accept what you are saying, but by doing that, didn't she override the traditional claim of Denktash and probably the rest of the Turkish Cypriot leaderships, that there are two people in Cyprus -Turkish and Greek Cypriots? After all, isn't this the TC fundamental theory behind separate political rights, political equality and all the rest? What she said only supports the GC theory, that in Cyprus there is one people, composed of various communities, two of which are the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot. Do you get my point?

Why are you so surprised that some people in the north can express their opinions that are completely opposite to the "official" doctrine? I suggest you read Sener Levent's articles and see how "undemocratic" the north is.

I found the article very interesting.

First of all claiming that Cyprus was never Greek because it was never a city state is like claiming Cyprus was never TUrkish either since it was never part of a Turkish State but only part of the Ottoman Empire.

Of course then we get to how the hell do Cypriots speak Greek and Turkish? Hmmm....

As far as the DNA linkage if this is true then how is it possible? Assuming the Greek CYpriots never wished to interbreed with the Ottoman conquerors how on Earth is it possible for their decendants to have similar genes?
Hmmm...
