TODAY in 1963:

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Those days of Kiks 'imprisonment' were indeed terrible times for all TCs. He is lucky that he was not a the grown up man he desired to be (then).

TURKISH CYPRIOT MARTYRS WILL BE REMEMBERED

The 21st-25th December National Struggle and Martyrs’ Week starts today.

We are commemorating our martyrs who fell during the Turkish Cypriot resistance which took the start with Greek Cypriot attacks against Turkish Cypriots on 21st December 1963, as part of the Akritas Plan.

The start to commemoration ceremonies will be given with a speech by Infantry-Major Ahmet Duman from the Security Forces Commandership.

Then, ceremonies will take place in Lefkosa(Nicosia), Girne(Kyrenia) and Gazimagusa(Famagusta).

Martyrs of the Ayvasil village who were the first victims of massive killings carried out against Turkish Cypriots will be remembered with a ceremony to be held at Turkeli Martyrdom on Monday morning.

On Wednesday the 24th, another ceremony will take place at the Museum of Barbarism to remember martyrs who fell during the tragic Kumsal Raid.

Two ceremonies will also be held in Iskele(Trikoma) in front of the Larnaca Martyrs’ Monument, one tomorrow, and the other on Tuesday- which will be particularly in memory of Larnaca martyrs.

Sorry aboutthe confusion Kikapu. I was refering to the missing. You will not know, had you been a young man, you might have never returned like some others.

Thanks Deniz for the clarification.

Well, in some instances, even young kids did not escape their unfortunate faith, despite their young age.!

The only positive thing I can say about our capture at the Kykkos School, Deniz, is that everyone returned alive to Nicosia on the day of our release from the time they were brought there, the young, the old, men and women, or else, you may not have had my story to read today.!

I am sitting in the lounge now, looking at the garden and at the bird feeders. A lot of sparrows, bluetits, chaffinches and blackbirds, all waiting for their turn to feed. As I watch them I am going through the events on the day of your return from captivity and thinking whether I had interviewed one of your family. But the mothers and children were in a different section of the welcoming area.

Sebeb olanlara lanet olsun.

Time to go for walk with my dog. Its peaceful and relaxing along the estuary..................I need a drink.

Cheers Deniz. Have one for me also, until we can have one together one of these days.!

On our day of release, my grandmother and me were taken to family member's house in Nicosia. The same family that had their house burnt down in Büyük Kaymakli that I talked about.

You may well have interviewed my mother. I have asked you before if you still had your notes from that day, but I believe you said that you did not.........too bad really. I do not remember kids being separated from their parents during the "welcoming period" upon our return. It may have been, but I do not have any recollection of it.

Had I known then, what I know now I would have kept contemporary notes. I was eighteen, and too young to appreciate these things. We were in too much fear then(real or imaginary?). The violence was never-ending.

Deniz, I have been away from the forum over the weekend, so may I take this opportunity to add my opinion that these dreadful events must not be forgotten. They must be remembered, not in a spirit of malice but of reconciliation, so that this island may move towards a brighter future and the mistakes of the past may not be repeated.

My turn to be a martyr. I too have a problem with the inability of GCs to recognise the suffering of the TCs, but I am not sure whether this is caused by ignorance of the situation or just being blinkered.

When I say ignorance, I am not trying to indicate a lack of intelligence, but a lack of information. In the 60's people did not have access to the sources we have today and many (on both sides) consumed and digested what they were told.

Now there are many that are unwilling to accept that what they have believed for so many years is not necesarily the whole story.

OK, I am waiting to be shot down now.
