Mobile Phone Guru!!

Postby Sega » Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:12 pm

I am asking all mobile phone experts to help me solve this problem. Basically I have 2 sim cards; one with my UK mobile and the other with my Cypriot mobile.

I would prefer to have one number, but since I have many business related tasks in the UK I feel it is unfair to have my associates to pay extra to call me, after all it's not their fault I live here, I might also not want to tell them I have left the country just in-case somebody tries to break into my UK house.

I basically want one phone that has the ability to read two sim cards which would suit the scenario presented above. My previous mobiles phones have mostly been Nokia, I did switch for a short while but I was sadly disappointed. Therefore I would prefer this phone to also be a Nokia.

To be honest I know a tiny bit about phones, but I am not into the phone scenario so any advice solving my dilemma would be a blessing.

Sega, I am no guru, but what about buying a cheap £20 nokia for your UK number and set it to 'call divert' to another phone with your Cyprus number.

Kafenes,that means you are paying for the call diversion,& the caller at the other end are still paying an international phone rate,because the call has been diverted.

Sega,it is best to stick with 2 phones,especially when one is connected to Vodafone.I know of a few people over here who have 2 cellphones for various reasons.It is the Vodafone one that you can get the SIM card for.You still have to have the hassle of 2 cellphone chargers.

No BCN, the caller in UK is only charged the local tariff. Sega is charged for the rest.

Speaking about old Nokia phone I still use my 3310, it has never broke and I am still happy. How would a person go about setting call diversion, would this be done by ringing your telephone provider (e.g. Orange, Vodafone) and asking them to set diversion.

Not that I care but if the caller was to be diverted would he/she see the number they are diverted too. Most of my UK contacts do ring my on my Cyprus mobile.

On a Nokia, it's in the settings - call settings. Just select "divert all voice calls" & enter the number. Beware you get charged for the part of the incoming call that you have diverted. Once your divert is set up, you can switch your phone off/bin it/eat it/smash your sim card up if you want as the divert is stored on the network. It will only stop working if your account runs out of credit.

You can also do it with dial pad shortcuts (USSD codes) which is what your phone does when you select the menu option above.

eg:

@ = Send (green) phone button

* Forwarding: **21*DESTINATION_NUMBER# @

* Activate: *21# @

* Deactivate: #21# @

* Delete: ##21# @

* Check Status: *#21# @

Alright then I think I will go ahead and do that then. It seems to be the easiest option, I am not sure about roaming charges though, hope they are not too expensive. My dad said that it was like 50p a min, but I am sure he is exaggerated. By the way I am using an Orange sim card.

The person calling you from the UK will be charged the standard local call, then you will be charged for the international call to Cyprus. I suggest when someone calls you, tell them you will call them back and do so by land line.

There are also some little gizmos for sale now that convert 2 sim cards into 1. It involves cutting up the cards so both the chips are set into a single card. I've seen them on eBay several times.

Just search using the words "dual sim" and you will see them come up.
