"The Simpsons" reference the Cyprus situation

Hey everyone,

I was just watching an episode of the phenomenal TV show "The Simpsons" and here was the scenario:

Bart and Lisa somehow land on a Turkish freighter (boat) and as the boat leaves Homer yells out from the dock:

Homer: Bring back our children you Cyprus splitting jerks!
(then it goes on)
Turkish Captain: Just for that we keep your children!
Homer: Will you raise them Christian?
Turkish Captain: Eh... (Copedick ????) Christian

Im sure most Americans didnt get this but I found it very interesting. I never thought my respect for this show could raise any higher:)

Episode Title: Mobile Homer
Episode #: 348
US Air Date: 20/03/2005

This episode can also be downloaded through torrent programs.

Ok, its coming a bit slow but I will wait

I am sure 99.9% of Americans didn't get this. Most of them wouldn't even know where Cyprus.

Personally I disagree with such things though. Media, in countries like the USA where people know very little about other countries, can very easily create in the minds of their viewers impressions that many times are not correct.
I would prefer a documentary where the Cyprus problem was presented objectively.

Know that feeling (16.5kb/sec and falling... on a 92kb/sec line... )

Wouldn't we all, but then how many people would tune in and watch it? I have about 150 channels on my tv system in the UK, I might make the effort to change and watch it, but I doubt 90% of my compatriots would. :(

Plus I don't mind the Simpsons using it as it's an intelligent adult show masquerading as a children's cartoon. :D

Stupid Americans still believe that Turkey is an Arab country. But the song `Istanbul not Constantinople` cheered me up in the end
