Surveys done with recent migrants to any societies would reflect the same picture.

Migrants move to another country filled with the glow of presumed prosperity and better conditions. Then they have a reality check . . . and it is not surprising they would complain about what they did in fact find.

Studies with migrants over a longer time period, and especially once the migrants have had time to integrate (something the TCs never did) usually are a better indicator of institutionalised / personal racism.

This article is a non-starter . . . we have no idea of how the questions were loaded.

Before you jump the gun at condemning GCs shah, reflect on the fact that you are just looking for "facts" with which to condemn them . . . making you . . . . . . . a racist!

That would be a great speech if it were not for the fact that repatriates and Pontians are in there.....

Yes the main gripe I had with the article was that it didn't identify demographics as in numbers relating to different migrants and countries of origin. It generalised to the point of becoming statistically insignificant.

After boasting about your ability to do research and find things out for yourself.......Not feeling in the research mood today then

As for significance......I would have thought that showing that there is hate of all things foreign is significant enough.....Seems to have hit a nerve with you as well....You have gone on the defensive. I wonder why that is.......How about I give that answer a go.......You are so wrapped up in yourself and the Greeks being kings of the world, that when reality hits it hits you hard.....That will be fifty Guineas please.

I didn't ask you to join in with the invalid gross generalisations as well.

Where did the article conclude the highlighted point?

You are misquoting and making absurd inferences.

Even if you didn't bother to read the whole thing just this:

[bSurvey reveals widespread racism in Cyprus
By Leo Leonidou
CYPRIOT society is deeply racist towards non-locals, according to a survey of migrants, repatriates and Pontians. [/b]

should have given you your answer....Researching the article itself would have been better than going off and researching something more in depth....What was I thinking

How many.........

I wouldn't be surprised if a migrant found your remark offensive. See, you are a true Cypriot! Welcome to the family

They would if they didn't know that I asked for these numbers a while back but no one would be brave enough to give them to me....  Now I know how relevant they are with a little help from Ray up there

I have no idea what you just said. Phoenix, your assistance please.....

Yes lets see if she offers an explanation.... 8)

I'm with Joe on this one, I also don't know what you are talking about . . .

OK, so that's two of us - Ray, your name is mentioned in the comment. What exactly is Zan talking about?

On the issue of Cyprus and immigration, here is an interesting article I read recently that may be relevant to this thread.

I do not live in Cyprus, but had to visit twice in the last few months. Not long enough to get a feel of the place. But how exactly is this racism expressed in day to day practices? There is a substantial difference between the unpleasant practice of not renting to foreigners, and habits like "Paki rolling" which happens in places like the UK that tout their race relations policy.

The few instances personally experienced when I was there were nursing staff , all of them Sri Lankan, all praised by their employer and all told me they were happy in Cyprus but see it as a staging post for other EU countries with higher salaries. It is likely that most migrants are in the same situation and eventually want to go to places d where they will make more money than in Cyprus. Which is what many Cypriots on this forum have done!

As for the prejudice of Cypriots, we all know about it, we hardly tolerate people from the village one mile away, let alone people from half way around the world. We did not have to import migrant workers to realize this, look at how both major communities treat Gypsies in Cyprus!

But the inclusion of the migrant problem is confusing the issue of settlers. The two are entirely different. Colonizing is a crime and has nothing to do with the treatment of migrants etc.

That’s not surprising. The majority of these migrants are from Sri Lanka.

I recently took my vehicle to a car wash; all employees were from Sri Lanka. The supervisor of this particular establishment even spoke perfect Greek to me.

Zan,who exactly are the Pontians? Are they a native Cypriot ethnic minority, who are neither Greek-Cypriots or Turkish-Cypriots?
