True. Is it (the key word) on the front page of the link or do I have to find the 'translation site' elsewhere?
Can you translate the word for 'translate into English' or even better 'ranslate into Turkish'. or do you want me to go to all that trouble and 'seek till I find'.

The damn English cant play cricket for sure. 77/9 for England against Sri Lankas 499/8

Some from my collection.
The rest alas lost in 1963

The Ottoman was used in Cyprus late into the British Administration (according to my grandfather (born 1877). This is the 40 Para. Minted in Constantiniyye (Turkish=Darb-ul Konstantiniyye). The date is 1300 AH (Islamic calendar) That should make it late nineteenth Century. I dont have the conversion formula at hand. You might have them in your collection anyway.
The second pic is for comparison with the British Piastre. Shows how Bakira (copper )was cheap from the size of it.

Deniz, that 40 Para has the accession date of AH1255,& the regnal year 19,which converts to AH1273,as Year 1 is AH1255.The first colonial Cypriot 1 Piastre was a large bronze coin that was first issued in 1879.That 1 Piastre that you've got there was only issued in 1934.How do I know.I recognise King George V's portrait,& I have got one.

Most Ottoman Turkish coins were struck at Constantinople (or Istanbul).

Here's an Islamic date converter; www.rabiah.com/convert .

If you are interested in collecting older Cypriot coins, you can send an email to Kyriacos Nicalaides, who is the Secretary of the Cyprus Numismatic Society,at [email protected] .He can put you onto someone if he can't help you himself.

Thanks BCN. I have a few. There are quite a lot around. The Ottoman is less frequent. I will check out the link.

Aidan, thanks for the introduction.

Your date converter reminds me of the time when at school in history lessons we had to use a formula to convert dates. They make life so easy now. Too easy, I'd say.

Deniz, when converting AH dates to AD dates, you've got to take off 3% to take into account that the AH year is around 11 days shorter than the AD year,& for the fact that the AH calendar is a lunar calendar,as opposed to a solar calendar.
