I though this type of burglary only happend in comedy movies

Paphos thieves ransack police station
POLICE chief Iacovos Papacostas yesterday ordered an inquiry into the brash heist at police headquarters in Paphos, after thieves came away with confiscated evidence worth some ?55,000.

The incident has been an embarrassment to the force, given the ease with which the burglars compromised security at the facility.

News of the break-in was discovered late on Friday, but it is not yet clear when exactly it took place.

The brazen bandits lifted a total of 27 fruit machines from a lecture room used as a makeshift storage space for police evidence.

Astonishingly, initial news reports said police were “still examining” what was stolen.
The intruders cut through the barbed wire perimeter, making their way unnoticed to the lecture room. They gained entry by smashing the glass window, and proceeded to steal the items at their leisure, by all accounts.

The Paphos headquarters, an outdated building, reportedly has only one guard tower and lacks a CCTV system.

It also emerged that recently a small amount of cash had been stolen from the Petty Crimes Office at the same building. The money belonged to a foreign national who was being detained there.

The latest break-in is being investigated by Paphos CID. By late yesterday afternoon, no police officers had been suspended.

Far from playing down the incident, Justice Minister Sophocles Sophocleous yesterday called the incident “a travesty” for the force.

“This is very serious…and I feel responsible for the matter,” he said.

Sophocleous pledged that investigators would track down the perpetrators but also those in the police responsible for letting the crime happen.

Well Cyprus would be a sadder place for me if everyone had to start barricading their homes. And of all things, police stations having to burglar-proof their buildings  .

I'm sure the ridicule they face amongst their friends will change things in the future though.

However, I'll bet no one would want to break into a Turkish Police station in the north though . . . .

Fruit Machines (I presume they are the gambling type) are illegal in the ROC, so I presume they have made their way to the north by now.

I can't believe how easy it is to wander round a police station .

I had to see one of the CID officers in June ~ went to the police station told them what I wanted to do and was let into the inside of the station past the front desk and left to wander round with out being challenged for over half an hour ~ I eventually found the guy I wanted to speak to and he commented on how long it had taken me to find him ~ when I said I'd got lost he replied " Hmm yes ~ everybody seems to get lost in here "

So I'm really surprised there haven't been more theft's .

Considering they probably originated from the north, thats highly unlikely...they are probably back in use in some underground gambling joint in the south....

Maybe the perpetrators wanted them back, and arranged / carried out the burglary too . . .

So are all gambling machines illegal in Cyprus, fruit machines are hardly casinos. Is all form of gambling illegal in Cyprus? I know this web company which runs a gambling site from Southern Cyprus, is that illegal too?

Kinda hypocritical in a way. I'm allowed to go to a betting office and place a bet on a horse or dog, legally. If I win, I get my money back, legally. If I lose, the money I bet, I lost legally.

Why are fruit machines and casinos illegal? Its all the same thing, gambling.

Hell, even the Tzoker, Lotto, scratchcards are gambling....

What is the difference between it all??

Either ban ALL of it, or legalise all of it.
