for three months of the year i reckon you would be better off buying your own car, thats what i do and i spend about 2 months of the year in cy! it even pays for my holiday spending money, buy a car in the uk that cyps like drive it around for 3 months out there and then sell it!

For once I have to agree with Dinos ~ just this once mind

I was fed up of paying silly prices for car hire years ago so i bought a second hand jap import ~ I had that car for 7 years with no problems what so ever and I reckon it paid for itself at least twice during that time compared to hiring.

I thought I'd splash out last year and bought another more recent model Jap import ~ a but sadly that was stolen earlier this year .

So buy your car ~ the cost is minimal compared to hiring every time you visit .

Just make sure it's in a safe place when you are not here as it seems certain area's are being targeted for car theft .

you cant go wrong with them jap cars really, i sent an audi out last summer for us to use and some english friends that now live in cyprus fell in love with it and wanted to buy it off us, so i sold it to them and took their jap import toyota corolla in part ex! i have been well impressed, i think its even better than the audi was, and that was an expensive car that i bought in england, i also bought a nissan in cyprus back in 2001 and we (the whole family) have been driving that non stop in cy. its now done over 100k and has even had a couple of accidents 1 of them quite serious (typical cyp drivers! silly cow sister of mine) but still drives like new, so buy yourself a cheap jap import and off you go! as for parking when not in cy, personally i have never had a problem just parking the car at my house either in the garage or in the garden when i leave the country, but then with an uncle and cousins like mine i dont think anyone would be stupid enough to steel from us

Can only assume the people giving advice have not followed the Cypriot rules of importing cars to Cyprus. You can not bring a car into Cyprus duty free (their rules not those of the EU)and if you do qualify for a duty free car then you cannot sell it!! You may buy a duty paid car over here but most used ones are generally a heap of s--t.and much more expensive than in UK.A friend bought one here from a local Paphos car dealer and wishes she had'nt as she has a lot of expense with it on repairs and storage etc.

beverly- as they say assumption is the mother of all f***ups!

just because i never went into the ins and outs of cypriot import duty it doesnt mean that i dont know! you are allowed to drive the car around for six months of the year duty free! then you either pay the duty, or put the car in a bonded, tax is now much cheaper any way and i have it on good authority that its about to become even cheaper or even free! for the 3 months he was asking about he wouldnt pay a bean! cy. is now in the eu and like it or not the import duty laws have to come into line with other eu country`s i.e used cars with their import duty paid in other eu country`s will be allowed into cyprus duty free. if he did want to register a car up to 1650cc it only costs 30 cents per cc minus the discount for the age of the car! e.g this year i imported 3 1.6 litre cars and only paid less than £200 tax for each one! are there any other import duty rules you would like me to explain or are you quite happy now? for your information over the years i have imported more cars to cyprus than you can imagine, i was just giving a forum member good advice on how to save money, as he hadnt asked for more details i didnt supply them! i also didnt explain to him that he should lower his trousers before going to the toilet cos i credited him with the sense that he already knew this! you however deemed it your job to get involved and treat other members like they are 3 years old!

as regards your second point yes most used cars in cy. are rubbish, and cy, car dealers are thieves like in most country,s. however if someone really wanted a good value used car i could send them in the right direction
