SMOKING IN RESTAURANTS AND ADMINISTRATION BUILDINGS...?

Postby Phileas » Sat Dec 15, 2007 6:37 pm

I am tired of going out in nice places and have to smoke the cigarettes and cigars of others who do not care.

Hey, Mr. President, Mr. candidate, what about public health and following the civilized nations that already banned smoking in public places ??

But if so, then you need to employ 100,000 policemen/women to fine whoever continues to smoke despite bans...

In Cyprus, when you land at Larnaca airport, funny to see the Cypriots smoking under the signs "no smoking"...

But that gives the first bad image about Cyprus to all tourists and business visitors from these civilized countries. Just observe their faces.

Please don't think all Cypriot are like this. I come from a very anti-smoking background, smoking is clearly at a disadvantage with us. My entire family is non-smoking, it's funny when somebody tries to smoke in our house, he get's several lots of evils .

Cyprus will soon become law abiding, however be patient as this will take time. It is a slow transition. It is true that Cyprus is not ready for this change, but soon enough it will have to change as it is part of Europe now.

Next time somebody smokes in a public place just tell about it's dangers or you can always cough or hold your nose when you go past. Thats what I do anyway.

Went to the Fish & Chip restaurant at the shopping centre approaching Coral Bay, we sat in the no smoking area; halfway through our meal a party of UK people came and sat at a nearby table and two of the women lit up cigarettes, instead of moving them to the smoking area the staff provide ashtrays.
This finished off a dissapointing night as last time we had a meal there it was being overseen by a Brit and the meal was excellent; this time the chips were half cooked and the fish dry, if we do visit again we'll check first to see who is staffing the 'Plaice' :P  :P

I have encountered this problem many times. Knowing that no one is going to enforce the law I tend to complain to the management of the resturant. I threaten to report them to the authorities or worse never return. The last time I encountered this situation ironically one of the Eastern European waiters asked my wife how long she had lived in Cypruss. I lol'd. She has in fact spent much of her life here since she is a Cypriot.

I agree with smoking ban in restaurants, and in general where people eat.

Though, I am totaly agains the ban in pubs, it's not normal. Pubs are places where you go to drink and smoke. If you don't want to drink and smoke go some other place or stay home. Or maybe a walk in the park would do.

I had a friend back home, that when we went out some place, he used to say: "why do these people drink alcohol and smoke here? I cannot stand these people". I told him: "that's why they come here, to drink and smoke, next time, just stay home".

I agree with you IcyNoAngel, Pubs are places where people should be free to smoke and more places should be clearly designated for smokers. This way, Non-smokers and peoples allergic to Tobacco Smoke would know they should not go into these places.

However, the Smoking Ban must be enforced not only in places where people eat, but also in Supermarkets, Post Offices, Hospitals, Banks, Schools, Stores and Gov offices.

There is no smoking in Supermarkets, Post Offices, Hospitals, Banks, Schools, Stores and Gov offices  as much as I can see.

I might say that in Banks some employees smoke in the back, and in schools.. man, these kids smoke a lot, which is sad.

Restaurants has smoking and not smoking areas or is not allowed at all. There are places that you can smoke freely. But I believe Cypriots are changing. I have seen young people that smokes that they do not smoke in frond of their parents or in friends houses as a matter of respect. They do not smoke close to kids and they ask permission to smoke in cars even if they are driving their own cars.

I am sure that smoking is banned in Government buildings but unfortunately that rule is not always followed. Since July in UK you are not allowed to smoke in any restaurant or public buildings. They do not have smoking and not smoking areas anymore. I do not smoke and I am against smoking but is their right if they want to smoke. I dont see why they banned smoking everywhere. They have rights too.
