Erdogan accuses Sarkozy of hypocrisy on EU bid
Published: 12/12/2007

ANKARA - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Wednesday accused French President Nicolas Sarkozy of having double standards on Turkey's troubled bid to join the EU, Anatolia news agency reported.
"Mr. Sarkozy says one thing in our bilateral meetings and says something else behind our back. This is not a becoming attitude in politics," Erdogan was quoted as saying in an address to a gathering of businessmen here.

Erdogan's comments came two days after EU foreign ministers issued a statement in Brussels which Ankara said failed to openly confirm its full membership objective.

The statement omitted the usual phrase of "accession conferences" when referring to membership talks with Turkey, using instead "intergovernmental conferences."

The wording of the text was the result of objections by France.

Sarkozy is a staunch opponent of Turkey's EU accession and advocates a special partnership with Turkey instead of full membership. Ankara categorically rejects the idea.

"We are a country that is currently negotiating with the EU," Erdogan said.

"One cannot change the rules during a game of football. They (France and its supporters) are trying to do just that. The debate over whether Turkey should have a privileged partnership is just ludicrous," he added.

Turkey began accession negotiations with the European Union in October 2005 amid a heated debate over whether the mainly Muslim country had a place in Europe.

So far it has successfully closed just one chapter and eight remain frozen due to Ankara's refusal to grant trade privileges to Cyprus under a customs union pact with the EU.

Boomerang,it's a pity that someone hasn't reminded Erdogan that Turkey is a Middle Eastern country not a European one.I wonder if that Shahmahan lives in Wankara, considering that he is one of the biggest dickheads on this forum.

Is Erdogan stupid, ignorant or an uninformed idiot? . . . methinks all three!

Even I know France (+ many more) did and does not want Turkey in the EU.

So why is he accusing Sarkozy of telling him one thing and doing something else?

I think it's time the Turks got better translators

However, once it has finally sunk into their thick skulls that there is no place for Turkey in the EU . . . . then we can make it clear that we were just kidding about the "special membership" too!

BC

Ignore phoenix. She does nothing but vomit hate over the forum.

While there are GCs like phoenix, TRNC will remain formally illegal. RoC will remain morally illegal. Cyprus will remain divided

BCN, thank you but I don't object to / classify countries according to their religion.

I am not a bigot . . . I only hate Turkey because the Turkish Army tried to kill me when I was 5 years old, succeeded in killing thousands of my relatives, invaded and destroyed tranquility in my country . . . . and have reproduced this pattern many times with other Nations.

Other than Turks . . . I love the World and its people (would rather the Chinese gave Tibet back, too . . . Hey, there must be something about that part of the World that spawns the likes of Turk / Huns  ).

Phoenix, being of Scots descent,I come from a very fiercely anti-Irish family. My family were nominally Romish Catholic until they saw the light. The Pope of Rome's cult has caused nothing but trouble, especially in both countries on the isle of Ireland.Roman Catholicism is hated by me,because of its association with republicanism, especially that practiced by Sinn Fein/I.R.A. - ethnic cleansing of the isle of Ireland of its Protestant & Jewish population.

I can understand why the Cypriot people resent both Greece & Turkey. Both of these countries have stuck their nose into Cyprus's internal affairs for far too long. The British Commonwealth owes the people of Cyprus a lot.I don't agree with the New Zealand Government maintaining relations with the regime up in Wankara, especially around the time of Anzac Day (25th. of April).A lot of Aussies & New Zealanders attend services at both Anzac Cove & Gallipoli.

I wonder how many British Commonwealth countries, apart from the U.K.,have a High Commission in Nicosia.

It might be worth pointing out that both Anzac Cove (renamed by Turkey in honour of the Anzac Force) and Gallipoli are in Turkey, which Australia and New Zealand invaded. I believe there are many monuments there honouring the dead of both sides.

It has been pointed out that there are no similar monuments to the Anzac forces who went to help Greece in 1941.

Observer,it was not only Aussies & New Zealanders who fought alongside the Greeks during World War II,but there was also a strong British contingent. The force was led by Sir Bernard Freyberg (who later became Lord Freyberg & a Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand). Most of the fighting in Greece was in Crete.

There was not only Aussies & New Zealanders who landed at Gallipoli in 1915.There were also British & French soldiers who also fought in that bloody campaign, but their role aren't even recognised at all.

There is very strong ties between the Royal Families of both Great Britain & Greece.King George II of Greece was in exile in London during World War II.King Constantine II of Greece was forced to flee to London after the Colonels' Regime came to power in 1967.King Constantine II still lives in London.

Sorry to hear about the life threatening experience you had at the age of 5 at the hands of the Turkish army but shouldn't you be blaming those that allowed them the opportunity to come to Cyprus? You question the end result without thinking why it happened?

Now we all understand why you are such a Turk hater and why you are so biased, this will help us understand your posts better in future and why we can never hope to agree anything with anyone who has been mentally effected by actions in the past.
