Broadband: let's do something about it

Useless speedtest, yet again.
We all have to choose a particular server to test...
is not always up to your speed in order to get good results.
I get better results pining and testing UK servers rather than some Primetel sponsored server etc...
Primtel just like any other network have client prioritisation... Try pinging any of CYTA server and you will get sky high results... again useless... You cant distinguish anything from these tests.

Its day to day usage which shows, FTP command responses, Youtube streaming, Showcast Streaming, Multiplayer gaming latency etc... You can shout all you want and complain about slow internet on this island but i think they've done it good so far. Cable/Dsl services are developing and evolving, is not Hi density population where companies would pull their independent network to low density areas...and the whole Cyprus is considered a low density populated area, but its still happening... ofcourse CYTA was a huge obstacle in the beginning but its over now, they have to wake up and reassess the situation.

Thanks, don't mind if I do.

LOVE YOUR FIRST POST KALAHARI, BUT CAN I STOP LOOKING AT THE FLAG NOW?

Was I supposed to see something? You know, like those stereogram pictures?

Back on topic . . .

Here is a quick note BTW, the quality of the telephone cabling at your premises plays a huge part in the reliability of the connection. I suffered from a flaky 1meg connection that CYTA dropped to 512k to see if it would be any better. The engineers "supposedly" checked it out and said that I was just too far from the main exchange but that it would be fixed in a few weeks after they upgraded it or something.

Turns out it was nothing of the sort.
Problem 1) The CYTA box going into the main house had a crack in it that had been letting in moisture when it rained and the connecting wires had oxidised and rusted (how the engineers didn't spot that as a problem when they checked it out I don't know) - re-stripped, re-joined and sealed them again.
Problem 2) Useless Slovenian "engineer" (big air quotes there) had done a gash job running the line from the main house to my office so had to redo that myself. (see this post for details: http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13822&start=10)

Once the above had been addressed I got them to put the speed back up to 1meg and I haven't had a single problem since.

So bear that in mind when considering the quality of your connection.

Although Ray is right in that this type of speed test is only valid if everyone were to run it from the same ISP at the same time of day to the same server. ISP's are never going to give a competitor's customer priority bandwith now are they?

Yes, but, TC, you are in London, my dear, and so cannot play! And it's not very nice to gloat (unless it's me doing it). But just to put you in your place, my friends in Sweden get over 20,000 download. Which, if you ask me, is not big and not clever.

123456, do I call you one for short? If I call you onetwo, everyone will think I'm testing a microphone. Or maybe we call you "threef". Or, maybe, 123456 is already short, short for 123456789? Or, hang on, is your name actually, One hundred and twenty-three thousand, four hundred and fifty-six? Or, no, OR… is your name actually 351.363 squared? In which case I shall call you Square.
