I heard somewhere that people will be using CYP up until one month after to help the changeover, so it still might be valid. I don't think shopkeepers will be rejecting it. I will need to check up on that. I know there are two prices on everything now and this has to remain at least a month after the changeover. I have not seen anybody use Euros as of yet, so you might find difficulty using this currency prior to January. Banks are willing to change CYP to Euros but the trouble is that it is holiday season. Your best bet of course is to ring one of the local banks, I personally would try 'The Bank of Cyprus' and 'The Popular Bank of Cyprus' and see what they advice you. You should not really find a problem as I truly believe people would still be accepting the local currency.
What I did!!!
You know what I did which might help you in your situation. I went to Co-op Travel and got a Cash Passport. This passport works like a normal credit card but with less charges. Most places in Cyprus take credit card so it works fine, some places require you to spent a certain amount though. You can even withdraw money from it and check your balance online, withdrawing money however uses a £2 surcharge, so it might not be worth doing it often. Using the card in stores does not generate any surcharges at your end.
The currency on my card is Euros, when the changeover happens it will not affect me in the slightest in terms of currency.
Give the local banks a call, that's what I would do. Just think I don't have euros, my brothers don't have euros, in fact none of my relatives do. So what are we going to do. First we will try to use the local currency and once that fails we will go to the banks and because it is mandatory there will be no charges on changing the currency. Bring some form of a VISA card just in-case.
Hope this helps, if anybody has information otherwise can you please correct me, I would be interested to know.
