Tony,it is best to take Euros,as the Cypriot Pound is goneburgers after January 2008.

I heard somewhere that people will be using CYP up until one month after to help the changeover, so it still might be valid. I don't think shopkeepers will be rejecting it. I will need to check up on that. I know there are two prices on everything now and this has to remain at least a month after the changeover. I have not seen anybody use Euros as of yet, so you might find difficulty using this currency prior to January. Banks are willing to change CYP to Euros but the trouble is that it is holiday season. Your best bet of course is to ring one of the local banks, I personally would try 'The Bank of Cyprus' and 'The Popular Bank of Cyprus' and see what they advice you. You should not really find a problem as I truly believe people would still be accepting the local currency.

What I did!!!
You know what I did which might help you in your situation. I went to Co-op Travel and got a Cash Passport. This passport works like a normal credit card but with less charges. Most places in Cyprus take credit card so it works fine, some places require you to spent a certain amount though. You can even withdraw money from it and check your balance online, withdrawing money however uses a £2 surcharge, so it might not be worth doing it often. Using the card in stores does not generate any surcharges at your end.

The currency on my card is Euros, when the changeover happens it will not affect me in the slightest in terms of currency.

Give the local banks a call, that's what I would do. Just think I don't have euros, my brothers don't have euros, in fact none of my relatives do. So what are we going to do. First we will try to use the local currency and once that fails we will go to the banks and because it is mandatory there will be no charges on changing the currency. Bring some form of a VISA card just in-case.

Hope this helps, if anybody has information otherwise can you please correct me, I would be interested to know.

Don't bother taking traveller's cheques,as some companies are now in the process of ending the issue of traveller's cheques, most notably VISA.

I never used a travellers cheque, how do they work. I don't think I will ever use a travellers cheque, you will probably still require some bank on the end of it. I know when I took the Co-op Travel Cash Passport VISA they stressed to me that it was not a traveller's cheque, well it looks like a normal credit card and it is valid for 5 years. I was unaware that VISA did travellers cheques.

Sega,here's a link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveler%27s_cheque .

The process of buying the things are very tedious,as my maternal grandmother found out just before she went on a trip to Singapore back in 1988.

Bring Cyprus pounds. You can use Cyprus pounds to pay until the end of January so that will not be a problem but it will be harder paying in Euros in December.

In this instance Tony you do exactly the same as you have dome on previous visits ~ which I presume is bring GB pounds and change them at the kiosk .

CY pounds will still be legal tender in shops / bars etc until the end of Jan but your change will be given in Euros .

So not really a problem unless the kiosk isn't open when you arrive on xmas eve then I suppose you will have to use the hole in the wall or bring some CY pounds with you .

I don't know about you Tony but I always had a couple of hundred in CY pounds left over from my previous visit when I used to come back to Cyprus for a holiday so was never in a rush to change up GB pounds

Have a great xmas holiday in Cyprus :D

As Tony will only be in Cyprus til the 5th of Jan it doesn't really matter what currency he takes but the Euro will be of no use to him initially.

What will he do with those Euros you are telling him to bring between the 24th and 31st of Dec
