I love ouzo,
always wondered why it turns white when you add water to it.
Is it some kind of chemical reaction?

That's ok, I am used to the alcohol, I'm drinking it as a refreshment drink.

Trying to remember chemistry O level now. Something about the water and the essential oils in ouzo forming a precipitate and that makes it cloudy. Not a chemical reaction, nothing so drastic!

"Scallops Ouzo" ... Damn! I wish I could get the recipe, but the little bastard who owns the restaurant won't give it to me despite the fact that he's rotated his menu. It contains scallops, fennel, and leeks in an ouzo cream sauce (no tomato). Extremely pleasing to the palate. Has anyone had anything similar?

Bubbles, let me hasten to assure you that running around half pissed through the back streets of a small Irish town wielding a flaming fire-brand, on a freezing late October evening.......IS NO JOKE !.

Sorry, wrong thread, I've just had a few glasses of Ouzo (that puts us back on track) and I thought I was dealing with the Turkish Delight issues.

Extremely sorry Bubbles, I think I am temporarily out of the game, I now realize that you were referring to the incident in the Dublin bar, I had forgotten that it was on this thread and immediately assumed that you were commenting on a post I made earlier (when Turkish Delight was under scrutiny).

If you can extract any sense out of all this, you have earned my respect, Best Wishes, I am a little perplexed at the moment.

I doubt you study the reaction of 'anithole' in 'o' levels but you are not far off. The aniseed oil is insoluble in water and very soluble in alcohol. So when the water is added the ''anise' will come out of solution as you guessed.
