Nikitas wrote:Kafenes you have a way of noting up the right thing at the right time! In the midst of a winter rainstorm raging now in Athens the idea of watermelon, halloumi and a cool ouzo is a message of hope.

To begin that meal how about some Kalloni sardines and Kalamata olives. Add some octopus with vinegar and ..... i got to get back to work!!!!

Kafenes, I am still having trouble with my koupes. The bulgur wheat I am using must be too coarse cause the casing falls apart. Maybe the bulgur wheat here in Greece is not ground fine enough. Maybe I just do no have the knack.

Nikitas, I will ask mum next time I call her. Last week she made some perfect koupes. The koupes I make are the Armenian boiled koupes which the shell consists of boulgur and very well beaten beef (like paste), the filling is like the ordinary koupes but beef instead of pork and then the whole thing goes in boiling water.

phoenix wrote:Here's a brief summary of Aniseed:

Aniseed is native to the eastern Mediterranean region.

Medicinal uses:

Contains phytoestrogen (these are mimics of the female hormone estrogen) . . . . so go easy unless you want to improve your breasts. 8)

Anise is a mild antiparasitic.

Its leaves can be used to treat digestive problems, relieve toothache, and to treat lice and scabies.

Flitsa already knows its uses to treat colds and flu.

When mixed with wine it's a remedy for scorpion stings.

Anise oil is a precursor used in the clandestine synthesis of psychedelic drugs such as 2C-B, 2C-I and DOB. So Theodoros may like to add this to his weed list.

Culinary

Many, because it has good digestive properties so best taken after meals.

Hunting and FISHING

Anise can be made into a liquid scent and is used for both hunting and fishing.

And as Eliko discovered serendipitously and independently (the best discoveries :D ) it has a particular effect on some dogs similar to catnip on cats. Some cats as well seem attracted to anise. Anise is perfectly safe for cats and dogs to ingest . . . but not in excess.

Nice start to the day for us collectors of trivia :D

Phoenix, only yesterday I was fishing using anise oil. Not easy to find but I have found one pharmacy in Paphos who sells it. Very expensive but a drop of it will go a long way. Another substitute is boiled liquorice and use the water.

Visited this year Mytilini in Greece where they produce the famous Plomari Ouzo, I bought a few bottles of it back... cool stuff, however I think it's a summer drink.

More of a jack daniels/ brandy person

Nothing like a hot summer evening sitting outside with an ouzo, watermelon and halloumi. (sorry C&P)

TC raki/Ouzo is far better than Turkish Raki. Greek, well I had a very dry one, not to my palate. The only spirit I partake, and then only for medicinal use.

When in Cyprus, somehow I suffer from tummy upsets every evening. Thats my excuse. My family often worry about their cooking. I never told them the truth.

Must re-iterate the words of Dinos, though not exactly!
