Staying in Cyprus 3 months +

Postby dogwindy » Tue Mar 22, 2005 5:46 pm

Hello,

I am going to cyprus in may and would like to stay there for the summer.

Going to Ayia Napa for a week with mates, and then i want to find work and a place to stay for a few months.

Any advice on this as ive never done it before,

what is the rent like? Where is good to live?

how easy is it to find work. I can do bar / waiting / PR / Timeshare

and what kind of wages do they pay?

also should i worry about any legal issues. I havent applied for working permits or anything, im just guessing loads of people do it and just come back when the sun goes down?

anyone else planning to do a similar thing.

thanks for your time,

D

Hi,

tourist visa are only valid for three months and do not allow you to work. As far as I know doing so can cause you major problems when caught. If you want to stay longer and work I guess you'll need any kind of permission. Unfortunately I only know the pre-EU-regulations and therefore can't give you any further advise.
If you wish to work in Ayia Napa there should be small and affordable places to rent available. Nothing luxury so of course.

cheers, city

I think if you are an EU citizen (ie British citizen), you can stay in Cyprus as long as you wish and also you can work without restrictions!

Hi Dogwindy

Even as an EU citizen, you require a Visa to remain on the island for longer than 3 months; you also need an Alien Card stating your reason for residence as 'Employment'. Yes, you can be imprisoned and deported.
Also, if you emplyer knows you are here illegaly, you may end up not getting paid - what recourse do you have?

Wages are VERY low; bar work maybe £2 an hour plus tips; you are competing against cheap eastern European labour.

Hi IaIith21

You are probbaly best off in Limassol; depends what work you want to do.

The only youth hostel I know is in Larnaca, near the Municiple market in old town. But I'm not sure wether it still exists.

You can live and work here if you are a UK citizen, although I wouldn't recommend it. The wages are really poor - you earn a fraction of the money you make in the UK, and the cost of living is pretty much the same, so it's not easy to make ends meet. Plus, if you're not coming until May, the season will have already started, so it may be difficult to find a job. My advice would be to come and give it a shot, it's a really nice place to live, the people are great and the weather is amazing, but don't expect to make a lot of cash, especially if you don't speak Greek, because that makes employment even harder to find.
