Mytiline for northern cyprus

Postby boulio » Tue Mar 22, 2005 6:34 am

I was at a dinner party over the weekend and there was a discusion about politics(ofcourse after a few ouza)any way there was talk on cyprus and someone brought up that there was a inital offer that was once considered to give mytiline to the turks, relocate the greeks off the island and bring in all the t/c from cyprus and have cyprus unite with greece.the time frame of the offer was not made clear but has anyone every heard of this?i know kastelorizo was offered in the ascheon plan in 1964 however i had never heard of mytilene.the t/c in 1974 had what 80,000-100,000 pop.the same as mytilene plus the extreme close proximitry of mytylene to the asia minor coast.plus mytilene was of all the greek islands one of the most heavily populated turkish pre-1922 population exchanges.

This is ridiculous, we live in the 21st century and ghosts from the past must be buried for good. Some people get very excited by such talk. They have a vision of purity of race and religion. This is not accepted any more, thank god. This is the era of tolerance and multi cultural societies, thank god! These ideas will reach Cyprus eventually, won’t they?

Look around this world, where do you see tolerance? Big fish eats small fish. Cyprus is the direct result of the world we live in.

I think you had too much ouzo boulio Image

I'm sure you're not advocating this policy, but mass population exchanges are no longer acceptable practice and would be considered ethnic cleansing today. You can't simply uproot people from their lives and plonk them down somewhere else simply for political purposes. Today, this kind of thing only happens during wartime, I can't possibly see a peacetime removal of people, it would go against the grain of all human rights legislation in Europe and internationally.

I don't know which island is Mytilene, but I heard the same story as Greece offering the Meis island to Turkish Cypriots, and uniting Cyprus with Greece. Are we talking about the same island?

I just did a quick yahoo searched, and found out that Myteline is what we call "Midilli". The island that I called "Meis" is Kastellórizo in Greek. I think the Myteline offer sounds fair  Don't you guys think so?
