Healthy debate? I'm not hopeful.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Healthy debate? I'm not hopeful.

I'm not going to rehash what has been going on in the other threads on this forum, save that there is a lot of mistrust and accusations flying around. The crap directed at me - despite my stance that opposes recognition of independence for the Turkish-Administered Cypriot north - is a case in point. My nationality has been questioned, and I have come in for some pretty direct abuse because I opined that the Turkish Cypriots have not been given a fair shake. I'd like to get some straight answers as to why you think this view of mine is wrong, without devolving into accusations and name-calling. However, given the past threads, I'm not exactly hopeful.

Utu, If your impression is like what I have seen in NZ with Maori women (particularly those who drink and know no other facial emotion than a sneer), then I'm not surprised. Opinionating is one thing, being obnoxiously loud-mouthed is quite another.

The problem isn't with the differing views but I think it's essential that political contributors make their relationship with the island very clear so that any bias coming from the writer is instantly visible and subsequently mentally compensated by the readers accordingly.

PEACE WITHOUT WAR
THIS IS OUR GOAL, NOT ONLY BECAUSE WAR IS UNCIVIL BUT ALSO THE MIGHT OF TURKEY WOULD ENSURE MUCH BLOODSHED, MAYBE EVEN A TRIGGER TO WORLD WAR 3...THIS CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED WITH HEAVY SANCTIONS AGAINST TURKEY UNTIL ALL PEOPLES 'TAKEN' THEIR RETURN WITH ALL TURKISH TROOPS. PARLIAMENT TO HAVE CYPRIOTS, BE IT MUSLIMS, REPRESENTING THE MUSLIMS OF CYPRUS, BUT FOR THE ISLAND TO UNITE AS CYPRIOTS UNDER IT FLAG OF PEACE, WITHOUT THE SYMBOL OF THE MOON WHICH IS FROM THE EGYPTION GOD OF DEATH OR THE UNDERWORLD, THE OPPOSITE TO RA THE SUN GOD! AND THE WORSHIP OF A METORITE IN MECCA NOT TO EFFECT THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IN CYPRUS
MODERN LAW IS FROM THE CHRISTIAN LAW SET TO US FROM THE APOSTLES OF CHRIST, UNLIKE SAUDI ARABIA WHERE THEY BEHEAD PEOPLE FOR CONVERTING TO CHRISTIANITY

Well Utu,

What I see here over the months I have been participating is a kind of almost religious fervor in some that the guilty should pay. A sentiment that justifies all kinds of punishments. This is unique to Cypriots it seems. Compare let's say with the Greek civil war in 1946-49. It cost 600 000 lives, but differences have smoothed over and life goes on.

Thenyou have to poker cum chess players. No I wont agree to X becaue then you are going to stick me with Y is their tack. And you cannot get anywhere with them.

You also get the mind readers who love to use the subjunctive, the like the word "would". They say things like "if the situation were to develop this way then you would" becaue apparently they can read th future.

The list includes some other types but there is no need to analyse them all, you get the picture. Perhaps to get around the mistrust and suspicion it might be useful to have a thread asking for people's specific fears of the other side in light of proposed developments like a BBF. Bringing those fears out in the open would (that word again!) be like playing poker with an open hand, but in a forum maybe it will be interesting and more fun than another round of "you did it.....it is all your fault...."
