Words of wisdom from a former leader

Postby cymart » Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:12 pm

Yesterdays Politis carried an excellent two page interview with George Vassiliou, former President from 1988 -1993.As a result of the inheritance left by Kyprianou, his predecessor,he was confronted by an international community which was either indifferent or hostile to the Greek-Cypriot positions on the Cyprus issue and spent years personally making a frantic effort travelling all over the world, following which he managed to re-start the negotiations and reach a critical point with De Cuellar guidelines which would have got a settlement far more favourable to this side than the AnnanPlan. However, his term in office expired and Clerides was elected after forming an alliance with DIKO which was conditional on him rejecting them!
He further clearly says that throughout his time in office he faced unbelievable hostility and opposition from the people who are now in power, including to the church leadership who were (and still are!) totally against a solution based on federal power sharing under which each side would have political equality.Consequently, all the efforts he had made internationally were wasted and Clerides arrived at the end of his second term with the Annan Plan, which his successor obviously rejected as well!
As he was still the negotiator with the E.U. he took Papad's word that he had agreed to accept it as a basis for a solution as genuine, only to realise later that he had fooled him and the E.U. in the process......
Vasiliou believes that Papad. and his followers secretly believe in the philosophy of the late Dountas, who insisted that the status quo is the best solution as a form of disguised partition because the Greek-Cypriot side cannot get a solution by negotiation which would prevent it's present recognition as the legal government of Cyprus internationally from being jeopardised.
Whoever wins the election in February will inherit a situation far worse than Vasiliou did in 1988 as the international community is far more hostile to us now than ever before, after five years of Papad. and his hysterical rantings about conspiracies etc etc!Last weeks incident with Sweden is just more proof of where we are heading and I don't envy whoever has to mend fences, let alone try to negotiate a solution which will now be worse than the Annan Plan as far as this side is concerned!
All this brown-nosing with Russia and K.G.B. Foreign Minister Ivanov makes me want to cry with dis-belief!Russia has very strong economic and political interests with Ankara and if Papad. really believes they will take our side against Turkey,he has really lost his marbles and should go home and retire without even waiting for the February election....Or is it all the dirty money that those off-shore firms run by Putins elite which operate from Cyprus that's behind this latest charade??Maybe that's why we have dropped to 32nd position on the international list against fighting corruption! That sounds more like it as Papad. and his son and their cronies are specialists in this field as we all know, don't we?
Let's face it,the political and economic establishment here, whichever political party they hide in,do not want a solution and Vasiliou being an economist who was not one of their clan saw through them when the chips were down and they removed him from office.

Best thing you can do is go to their site:politis.com.cy and try to find it under their archives.

Cymart,
A most excellent and informative post. I agree with your sentiments regarding the problem of the vested interests being an impediment to a solution. Sadly there are also vested interests in the North that view teh status quo as being an acceptable solution.

It looks like you have a very lengthy opinion on matters!

But Cymart, how do you qualify in being within "our side"?

Phoenix,
Presumably Cymart is a GC. Doesnt this count him as being on your side then or is having a different opinion to you disqualify him.

Issy1956 . . . please feel free to disclose your leanings, but I was asking cymart.

Since you have come forward, please enlighten me as to how you have determined I am of a different opinion to him?

If you are on the same side as him why are you are asking for his qualifications to be on your side. Quiet simple really.

Pheonix, no need to waste your time with this clown, he is just a shit stirrer who pretends to have GC ties ( I think he said his wife was GC) yet he kicks down the GC every chance he gets.

I guess he is no diko supporter either.

I always laugh at these politicians, the cyprob has been around for 33 years now and in all that time NONE of them have had any ideas how to help solve it, yet now come the elections, well they all blame Tpap for all the previous fuckups from the very people that are putting Tpap down.

As for Cymart, he is only too quick to regurgitate crap from newspapers that suit his interests. He obviously has financial interest in the north thats why he is so hell bent on giving up cyprus to the highest bidder to get his own shit back and screw the rest.

Just read up his other postings and you will see what i mean.

Long Live Tpap, who never sold us out, may he win the next term and the term after that.

Like i said to him once before, i wonder what his wife would make of all his anti GC sentiments, bet she don't even know he posts, poor woman.

Phoenix, are you here just for the sake of recrimination? If so, then I admit I misjudged you.
