And I, dear Eliko, must assume you know the background history to the flag in your avatar. From your eloquent manner of speech I'd be sorely disappointed if you not only turned out an advocator of Cuba's ongoing "human rights abuses, including torture, arbitrary imprisonment, unfair trials, and extra-judicial executions" but also a hypocrite :?

As for the solution for marijuana, there is no right or wrong answer, it comes down to where you stand on the liberty vs. nanny-state line. The "make it illegal and send them to jail" approach, should be obvious to everyone, isn't working otherwise the per capita heroin overdose rate would not be higher in Limassol than Amsterdam. I agree hard drug use isn't acceptable with all the addicts and crackwhores destroying the fabric of society committing violent crimes and spreading diseases but we need a new approach. Sticking them in cages? Feels like we're still back in the medieval ages. We need to put our thinking caps on and come up with new and radical solutions, especially since we've formed such a huge economic, political geographic union for the sake of pooling ideas together to improve our future.

zan, I must protest your assumption that my reply to Theodoros would indicate prejudice, I merely sought to advise him of his folly in making such enquiries as he did, in the manner he did.

As to the reference made to the possibility of him being incarcerated with a Turkish cellmate, I would regard that as an attempt to introduce a little levity into a serious subject, (evidenced by the 4 laughing faces in conclusion) coupled with the fact that his name would appear to be of Greek origin.

As to the 'Midnight Express', I have just watched it and found it quite informative, however, I did not detect any evidence to alter my impression of the Turkish (or other) penal systems, there are obviously good and bad inmates and prison officers throughout the penal systems of ALL nations, the Turkish being highlighted in this instance since it unfortunately became relevant due to certain responses.

I readily apologise for any offence to any who may have misconstrued my intentions, on hindsight , I can see where such misconstruction might occur but am compelled to defend my contention that I am in no way guilty of any such prejudices.

I accept your explanation and apology but by placing the laughing faces in the place, i.e. next to the comment that gave offense would have been better.

I am always offended however by the term "Have you ever seen "  Midnight Express   " with out the use of several smilies before and after it.

Zan adding smilies to "Midnight Express" does not make the atrocity disappear . . . or are you happy with Human Rights abuses in Turkish prisons?

We don't need to be apologists for every Turkish err.

Apologies to Eliko since I was the one who extracted his "Turkish cellmate" comment . . . but I did stress Eliko's humour / jest as an extenuating circumstance.

But I can see now, we are all enlightened about the seriousness of incarceration (and thanks to GG, I have learnt something entirely new  )

I am not happy with any human rights issues anywhere and that includes the "RoC". But then again i am not happy about prisons because for those that can be rehabilitated I would prefer a much more humane and effective system and for those that cannot a mental asylum.

Both the ombudsman and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) received complaints that police and prison officials subjected foreign inmates in the Nicosia central prison to discriminatory treatment as well as beatings and other forms of abuse. Foreign inmates also claimed that prison officials did not answer their calls for protection from fellow inmates and prevented them from reporting mistreatment without prison officials also being present. NGOs further reported that inmates incarcerated for nonviolent crimes were confined with dangerous criminals and rapists. Unlike in previous years, there were no reports that prison officials subjected Turkish Cypriots to discriminatory treatment

Zan "Amnesty International" would have little to do if Turkey did not constantly keep them busy

New rights groups are popping up all over the place to highlight what Turkey is synonymous with . . . Human Rights violations.

Here's another new one to me:

The TCs brought and keep Turkey in our country Zan . . . so I have no choice but to worry about their influence.
