Marcoullis: Turkish Cypriot isolation is a non-issue
By Jean Christou
FOREIGN Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis yesterday called on the UN stop making an issue out of the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, saying it was in fact a ‘non-issue’.

Marcoullis was commenting on UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon’s latest report on Cyprus, which said it was regrettable that the ongoing debate on the lifting of the isolation had become one about recognition.

Marcoullis said that if Turkish Cypriots felt isolated, it was a direct result of the Turkish occupation and the secessionist policies of the illegal Turkish Cypriot administration.

“Efforts by the UN Secretariat to make an issue out of something which does not exist – the myth about a so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots – must finally come to an end,” Marcoullis said on her return from a visit to Israel yesterday.

She also mentioned the current attempts by the authorities in the north to stop Turkish Cypriots from doing their shopping on the Greek Cypriot side.

“This is what I would call isolation imposed by the Turkish Cypriot leadership on our Turkish Cypriot compatriots,” Marcoullis said.

The Foreign Minister did however welcome Ban’s reference to
the need for compliance with Security Council resolutions when it came to ending the so-called isolation.

“This is a safeguard for us, we have never said we oppose the economic development of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots but everything should be done in line with legality,” Marcoullis added.

Commenting on her trip to Israel, Marcoullis said she had raised the activities of some Israel businessmen in the north. She said the Israeli government had finally issued a travel advice and warning to its citizens to be careful when they purchase property in the north of Cyprus.

“Our request met with the understanding of the Israeli government and I believe we will have
further cooperation with them,” she said.

there is no isolation. There have been measures in place by which the TC's can trade via the ROC institutions and export to anywhere they like. They can also hold any sporting events they like within the islands CFA.
The fact that TC's opt out of using these facilities is their own choice.

One institution in which the TC's have opted to use the ROC for, against their isolation, is the ROC/EU passports. WHy don't the TC's feel just as strongly about using this govt facility to end their isolation and not the others I wonder?

Party line alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know very well that using your "facilities" apart from the passports , which still play a little into Tpaps hands, will destroy our rights by stealth. Playing ignorant to that fact and then going around the world stopping all trade with a partner in Cyprus is a human rights atrocity and then you back it up with distortions of the truth.

so you've made a call and judged that the benefits of holding the Cyprus passport ouweigh the cons it presents against you seeming independant. Everything else is also up for consideration. At the end of the day your collective interest will be negotiated against your individual one, by all the TC's...... as has happened with the passports.

Can this be the same Israeli government that is illegally building setlements in Palestine's West Bank, or is there another Israeli government that I don't know about.

After shaking hands with a GC, count your fingers. After shaking hands with an Israeli count your arms!

After the recent love-in in Athens, I'm not sure if Greece isn't edging Israel out of top position.
