Tassos spills the wrong beans on Bildt
By Leo Leonidou
THE SWEDISH embassy was yesterday put in the awkward position of correcting President Tassos Papadopoulos over comments he made regarding the country’s foreign policy.
Papadopoulos raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles on Sunday by announcing that Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeld told him Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is not following the country’s position regarding the Cyprus problem.
According to the President, Reinfeld made the comment during a phonecall between the two leaders.
Behind the scenes, Stockholm has informed Nicosia that its policy on direct trade is constant and formulated by the Swedish government’s Foreign Ministry. They added that there are no disagreements, labelling Papadopoulos’ comments as “unfortunate”.
Commenting, Swedish Ambassador to Nicosia Ingemar Lindahl yesterday told the Mail that a trip by Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoulli to Stockholm planned for December 18 has since been postponed.
“Sweden has one common foreign policy, decided by the government and executed by the Foreign Minister. Any other interpretation is unfounded,” he said.
The issue is apparently over attempts to establish direct trade with Turkish Cypriots. According to Papadopoulos, Reinfeld told him that it was his Foreign Minister who wants direct trade with the north and not the government of Sweden.
The Cypriot President also said that it was also well-known that former Prime Minister Bildt has always maintained that direct trade would help the Turkish Cypriots economically and would therefore help with the reunification of the island.
However, the Swedish government, along with the governments of several other member states, consider the EU regulation over trade with the north can’t just disappear as it’s a vital issue in bargaining between the EU, Cyprus and Turkey as regards the latter’s EU accession hopes.
Ankara has been trying to link direct trade between the north and the EU with its obligation to open ports and airports to Cypriot vessels.
