Outrage over block flight bookings for elections
By Leo Leonidou
THE SPOKESMAN of Presidential candidate Ioannis Kasoulides has criticised President Tassos Papadopoulos’ campaign team over an apparent block booking of airline seats for overseas students who will be voting in February’s election.
According to an online newsletter, the Papadopoulos camp has booked several thousand seats, taking up the majority of the supply, which has forced the opposition to make other arrangements.
Loucas Fourlas told the Mail: “We have also heard this rumour and if it turns out to be true, we will be very annoyed as we feel they are trying to block the other candidates.”
Fourlas added that his camp will now arrange for charter flights.
“Exact details will be known closer to the time and we are expecting all students to let us know of their plans. It’s too early to know exactly how many there will be, but the number will be in the thousands for sure.”
He added that Kasoulides enjoys the strongest support from students, especially from the US, UK and Greece.
“The cost for the charter flights is expected to be very high, but what else can we do,” he wondered.
The spokesman also called for a change to the electoral system which would allow Cypriots abroad to vote in their country of residence, as is the case in much of Europe.
“If we want to call ourselves European, we must follow their lead,” he said.
No representatives from the Papadopoulos or Christofias camps were availlable for comment on the matter, while Cyprus Airways said that they will be allocating seats between the three candidates equally.
“There have been 30,000 seats allocated between them and these are not just for students but for all Cypriots,” explained Kyriacos Kyriacou.
“Close to 26,000 will cover Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, London, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester while the rest will cover Oman, Bahrain and Beirut.”
He added that no seats have been paid for yet but that they have been set aside as reserved.
