Umit,British rule actually marked the beginning of Cyprus' establishment as an independent country separate from both Greece & Turkey.

The Sovereign Base Areas have done a lot of good,as it provides employment for a lot of native Cypriots.

Don't forget that once a Federal Republic of Cyprus is established, the braindead ideologies of Enosis & Taksim will finally be dead & buried permanently.

Umit, there seems to be no real push to get rid of British bases.Even Pappy cannot make up his mind.I know the thousands of Cypriots who work there do not want them to go.
Maybe in ten years it may happen but at the moment Cyprus still depends on the revenue the bases provide.

Purdey, the Sovereign Base Areas are legally established under the terms of the 1959 Independence Agreement. There may be a cession of some territory, but the S.B.A.s will still exist anyway.

I don't think ENOSIS or TAKSIM have the real literal meaning they had in the past! I as a TC can say that I don't know anyone who wants to become a part of Turkey, why should we? There wouldn't be anything good in it for us! Even the guys you call partitionists don't think of partition as being a part of Turkey! When it comes to the GC side they don't want to become a part of Greece either anymore. The thing is that the ideology of Taksim and Enosis have changed now! Taksim for GC's now is the thought of one day in any settlement having to give citizenship to 1000s of mainlander Turks and the overall Turkish pop. of th island increasing drastically an other aspect is Turkey entering the EU and Turks becoming EU citizens, shits them as well. That's just one of the reasons I think Turkey will never enter the EU. ENOSIS for TC's is that the Greeks using the we are all Cypriot line to dominate us, turning us into "Muslim Cypriots". They might use their pop. advantage to do things like abolish Turkish as a national language, make us all go to Greek schools and slowly assimulate us. Just look at what happened to the Turks of Trakya or crete! and when you got guys like piratis saying cyprus is no different from crete! just imagine what could happen.

P.S: When was the last time you where in Cyprus?

Umit,I've never been to Cyprus, but I knew 2 guys who served in the British Army in Cyprus at different times in the 1950's.One of them was in a section that got shot at by an EOKA terrorist, who,by the way, deserved to get a bullet. This took place in the Kyrenia area.

Both parts of Cyprus deserve to be reunited as one country,as the Cypriots are neither Greek nor Turkish. If they can't understand each other's languages, then they've got a common language to fall back on - English.

My mother recalls those times in the '50s when members of the British Army would enter the house announced and start searching in as obstructive and authoritarian manner as possible.

A number of times she had jewellery disappear ... but she said she felt sorry for them as they looked uncivilized and from poor backgrounds.

She said the Scottish ones were always polite, it was the English ones that were rude.

Phoenix,it wouldn't have been English soldiers that were rude.It is more likely to have been a few rogues from one of the Irish regiments in the British Army. The Irish aren't well-liked by the Scots,as the Scots are mostly Protestants, just like a majority of people in Northern Ireland are.

Oh give it a rest Phoenix.I have never heard such rubbish.Scottish Nationlist are we now.I remember the Scottish in Cyprus, big boots, and get the fuck out of my way!! Whenever there was trouble the Scottish were asked to lead the line, just as they are now. They take no prisoners they never have, hardest regiments in the British Army.
By the way they kicked in the door on our house as well, but unannounced...

Purdey, the Scots Nationalists are almost as bigoted as Sinn Fein/I.R.A..Alex Salmond is a crackpot who has been around too long.Independent Scotland my arse! The only one of the 4 British countries that hasn't got its own Parliament is England.
