I have a similar one: I was in Zurich working for a Greek Broker when one night I decided to visit Roxy's Disco and yes we are talking about 1989... So i t was the time when ladies would be asked for a dance and the boys were hoping that slow music would be played by the DJs... So I dared to ask the most beautiful lady to dance with me but I had to use all the French Italian and German words I knew in order to invite her for coffee at my cheese!!! At least that was the translation of what I said. Surprisingly the woman said "Varum Nicht" which means why not, but at the time I only knew NICHT which means no, so i said ok Guten Nacht, and I left!
Next night I am sitting with the barman who furiously said to me" You have asked the most beautiful woman to come for coffee at your cheese, obviously mixing Kasse and Kesse House / Cheese but why did you leave when she said Why Not? I mean, man who do you think you are> Al PAtsino or something? and before I could utter a word, the same lady was tapping my back and with a smile full of promises she said in South London accent " Why for heavens sake did you not try ENGLISH???? ......THE LADY WAS BRITISH!!!!! no need to tell you the rest of the story.....
