Ban Ki Moon says isolation on TCs should be lifted

Ban Ki Moon says isolation on TCs should be lifted

Postby Viewpoint » Wed Dec 05, 2007 8:41 am

Ban Ki Moon another UN leader who has stated that isolation on the TCs should be removed. 2008 is going to be interesting, lets see the EU and UN keep their word and the GCs squirm for lost chances with a leader who has in 5 years taken them nowhere but closer towards agreed partition. Thank you Tasos, lets hope you get another term.

Ban Ki Moon also claims he was very disappointed with meeting with both leaders and considers both sides are equally to blame for no progress on the 8th July agreement.

That blows a few GCs arguments to pieces dont you think, always blaming Talat for the lack of progress.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has called on the UN Security Council to lift the international isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people.

Mr Ban’s call came in his latest report, in which he called on the Council to extend the mandate of the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus for another 6 months.

The Turkish Cypriot Side has welcomed the report as `positive`.

The UN Secretary General Ban presented his report on Cyprus to the UN Security Council recommending the extension of the UNFICYP’s mandate for another six months, until the 30th of June 2008.

In the report, Mr Ban calls on the Council to end the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, calling it as a move which will contribute to the reunification of the island.
Expressing the view that 2008 could bring about a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, Mr Ban called on the two sides in Cyprus to refrain from blame game and to show flexibility and political courage.
In the report, he also called for the implementation of the 8-July Agreement and the Confidence Building Measures proposed by the two sides.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica has welcomed the report as a positive document.

Speaking during his weekly press briefing, the spokesperson said that a brief evaluation of the report showed that it includes objective and realistic evaluations on the Cyprus issue.

He said the Turkish Cypriot Side shares the view expressed by the UN Chief that the 2008 will be a crucial year for the Cyprus problem.
`Mr Ban’s view fully coincides with the proposals tabled by President Mehmet Ali Talat during last September’s leaders’ meeting` he said, reminding that the proposals envisage the solution of the Cyprus problem by the end of 2008.

Pointing out that the report underlines the need for concrete steps towards bringing about a solution to the Cyprus problem, he said `the address of this call is the Greek Cypriot Side, which has been playing for time to delay the solution of the Cyprus problem`.

He added that the Turkish Cypriot Side has been working hard for the resumption of fully-fledged negotiations.

Welcoming the UN Chief’s call for the lifting of the isolation on the Turkish Cypriot people as a move encouraging the solution of the Cyprus problem, he said ‘it is very meaningful that Mr Ban finds it disappointing that the debate over the lifting of the isolation had been turned to a debate over recognition`.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot Side and the UN Chief have a similar approach towards the lifting of the isolation, he said that Mr Ban stressed the need for all international actors to take the view that the lifting of the isolation will contribute to the efforts aimed at reuniting the island into consideration without further delay.

Greek Cypriot side expresses reservations over UNSG's report on UNFICYP

04/12/2007

by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations (CNA) – Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis has said that the Greek Cypriot side has reservations and objections regarding UN Secretary General’s report on the United Nations operation in Cyprus, and particularly as regards his reference to the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Mavroyiannis welcomed Ban Ki-moon’s recommendation that the Security Council extend the mandate of UNFICYP by a further period of six months, until 15 June 2008, but expressed the Greek Cypriot side’s reservations and objections to the way the UNSG refers to some events and the terminology used.

“I particularly note the objection of our side to the reference of the so called ‘isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community’. Our position is that is time to terminate this myth. There is no isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, either as individuals or collectively as a Turkish Cypriot community,” Mavroyiannis stressed.

He noted that Turkey has set up an illegal entity in Cyprus’ occupied areas, an action that has been denounced through UN Security resolutions 541 and 550, and that resolution 550 called on all states not to recognize this illegal entity.

Mavroyiannis noted that despite the fact that the report refers to the issue of lifting the so called isolation, it also makes clear that any actions towards this direction must comply with the UN Security Council resolutions, and stressed that “this is something of determining importance for us”

The Cypriot diplomat also expressed regret that while the report notes the significance of economic development as a factor that can contribute to a solution, there is no reference to the repercussions of occupation. In addition, no reference is made to the significance of the return of refugees and of their properties and to the consequences of the construction boom and the destruction of the cultural and religious heritage, which encumber efforts for a settlement.

Mavroyiannis also said that despite the fact that there is an effort to keep equal distances, it is clear that the stance of the Greek Cypriot side is generally described as a constructive one, despite the fact that it is said that political will is required from both sides with a view to achieve progress.

“Our side has shown its political will. What is needed is political will from the Turkish side, which unfortunately, as indicated in the framework of efforts to implement the 8 July Agreement, is absent, as well as a series of confidence building measures, including the opening of new crossing points across the cease-fire line,”, Mavroyiannis concluded.

If the report is the same as the one in kibris and bayarak, then I do not belive it...need more sources coz your papers are only good for feeding the chooks...

PS...it was the swedish ambassador to turkey who said the following
Asp defended that Cyprus question had to be resolved before Turkey becomes a member of the EU, and underscored that, "EU made promises that the blockade on Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) would be removed, but failed to display this decisiveness. Sweden feels sorry for this. We made some steps but there should be more."

The ambassador said Sweden thinks that Cyprus question should be solved under the U.N. umbrella.

All I see is diplomacy to the max...End of the day he is saying UN, like moon...lift isolations as long as they do not interfere with UN resolutions...

I mean you guys how many times you gonna hear the same thing?...Are you trying to wear them down or something?

No nation is ready to award Ethnic Cleansing...simply put the world is not as advanced as the turks...

Now get back and analyze those 60%. coz as you said I ain't no good with figures...show me the way...

I will give you some facts zan, when you stop acting like a jihadi...and what is the point of giving you facts when you do not accept them...to you it always comes to ENOSIS, yesterday and today (talking shit), 63, and keeping the ill gains...anything else just bounces of your head...Simply put you have nothing of substance for me or actually anyone to input to...

I mean zan have you got anything to offer as far as reconciliation?...Ways to co exist?...no because you are stuck in some kind of a time warp...unable to go forward...waiting for that elusive recognition and when it doesn't come you blame everyone else...You have to get it through your head that recognition is not turkeys best interest...

have fun zan...

PS...My only comment is that your papers usually miss a lot of information...This is why I never trust what halil posts...he doesn't even bother to cross check...
