It was not done only to appease the church or god. It was a way to save the land from greedy feudal lords and the Ottomans. The church could not be expropriated so the peasants left land to the church and their relatives continued to cultivate it. Same scheme was used all over the Christian areas of the Ottoman empire.
It was the equivalent of an offshore asset protection company.

As I said above 'the practice was allowed'. Surely if the 'Masters' were so terrible, intent on massacreing you, do you think they would have asked your permission. It must have been their 'goodwill' which allowed this to carry on. I am sorry you do not see the point I make.
