The UK has dropped its mask

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The UK has dropped its mask

Postby Bananiot » Mon Dec 03, 2007 2:30 pm

I was listening to Erato Kozakou, our Foreign Minister this morning. She said that the UK has dropped its policy mask and now openly supports the Turkish positions. Is this how diplomats behave or is it just neophyte Cypriot diplomats. Is she offering the best services to her countries or is she just interested in winning some points for her boss?

Erato Kozakou was talking about Sweden which looks as though is doing a UK on Cyprus.

It only took us 50 years to understand the UK policy on Cyprus. Wow!

Right, we should have declared war on the UK 50 years ago. My point here Nikitas is that even if we are correct in our considerations, a responsible Minister of a responsible nation, does not go on the air to fry a country which is an important player on the Cyprus issue and in our part of the world in general. This government is capable of only making enemies but do you remember what Papadopoulos said a short while ago? Here it is, another amazing third world stupidity:

If the General Secretary of the UN came to me with a new plan for the solution of the Cyprus problem, I would ask him. Did you get a response from the Chinese?

Ending of (the so called) isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. Direct flights etc.

Bananiot I was not criticising you, but the present minister and every other minister who all these past 50 years have not realised that partition is the name of the game played on us.

But the U.K. said they would work towards those goals.

Everybody is working towards those goals as an ideal.

That does not mean the U.K. has adopted a new position which would grant instant recognition. Eventually direct flights would also be available for all wanting to travel to Cyprus, when resolution of the Cyprus problem leads to the opening of the whole Island again.

The position of the U.K. has not changed, unless you mean the have re-instated their goals of working towards these ends.

There are also no changes visible to suggest they are by-passing the need to remove the Turkish troops from Cyprus first.

Not stupid at all Bananiot. One of the major differences between the AP and the Gambari agreements is that the latter need the blessing of the entire Security Council (China, France, Russia, UK, US). Henceforth, TP wants any plans/agreements to have the SC involved instead of just the US/UK for obvious reasons...

If you care to look at the British Government's response to the direct flights issue a few months ago you will see that they said that according to international law direct flights cannot take place without the approval of the government of the destination country i.e the ROC.
My personal view is that they are hoping that they will get a response from Turkey (not the TCs) that will benefit the Greek Cypriots. Unless this move towards recognition is linked to a conciliatory gesture from the Turks it will be a waste of time and quite frankly myself and I hope thousands of British Cypriots will demonstrate their feelings - in fact a bloody good riot in London would show the UK government that we are pissed off with their support for a country who is the bully boy of the Mediterranean - its even trying to bully its way into the EU for God's sake.
