CC,

I really do hope you fare better in France. Having lived with the French for a while, I find that they an be just as mercenary and venal as the rest of us. Perhaps it was like that where I was, in the southeast. But I found that they are just as quick as Cypriots to switch from the "comme vou voulez" mode to the "con de ta mere" mode. In fact the phrases translate word for word into colloquial Cypriot.

A bank blunder landed my in Limoges for a week without money. I was treated like garbage for six days. The seventh day the money arrived and I became Monsieur with a capital M once again. Sort of reflects your Cyprus experience.

But for sheer style and quality of life I too would veer towards France, but in a different part, somewhere where I am within driving distance of Spain or Italy. Living in France and being able to hop over to Barcelona or Milano is more my dream.

Is that a threat !!

Sadly Ignorance of Cyprus is something I wish I had. Had I not been sucked in 20 years ago I would probably be better off.

I jumped in on this when other people were pulling apart the U.K.

I would think that 20 years knowledge would be sufficient. And as for leaving the U.K. that is your right it is a free country and you can come and go as you please.

Yes the U.K. has its problems, but , there are thousands of people every year busting a gut to get into the U.K. and then there are the illegal one's.

When we first moved over to Cyprus, you had to prove that you could support yourself, our passports were stamped in red with a statement that read you are not allowed to seek employment either paid or unpaid.

That I expect has never happened to you.

Actually that stamp about "employment paid or unpaid" is copied directly from UK practice. I remember it very well on friends' passports in England.

You have highlighted one of the problems of illegal immigration. The effect on 'normal' tax-payers can be devastating and off - putting.

To some people twenty yars of learning can never be enough. Nothing to do with you, its just that the circumstances alter Behaivioral patterns. Deep down they are , we are good people.

As you said , to leave the UK is my prerogative, its a free country.

I could say the same to you. But you are welcome. Sometimes its good to ignore the 'bad' aspects. In the uk, you cannot ignore.

That is new to me, then how come there are so many non-English working in the U.K. or claiming benefit.

As I say you can come or go as you please. The U.K. is not a prison.

Has any asked you or anyone else to prove that you can support yourself without the aid of the state ?
