Hunters At It Again!

Nikitas, i dont care about animals right now... i eat Rabbit Stifado, Beef Stifado, Octopus Stifado... whatever.

I care about my own safety when fucking retards shoot in close proximity from where my family is. I told my son to lay low in our car yesterday as we were passing through the countryside... thats how close they were shooting.

I am angry because by clearly looking at the statistics, there are so many hunting related accidents in Cyprus and yet no one dares to do something...

I had an official warning from Police for speeding on...WINDSURFING!!!...they described it as a "Dangerous Activity" and if i am caught again i will go to court. So WHY shouldn't i be so angry when there are Hundreds of brainless Xorkadoi running around shooting stuff and nothing is done?????

Thats story with a cat shooting...its not acceptable, i hope they are taken to court and brought to justice. 1 year in prison, be it... but for using a gun in a builtup area, i'd suggest 3 year imprisonment.

Why no restrictions and actions are taken? Who would risk imposing something before elections... so many ppl go hunting, it will affect voting big time... well, in my opinion.

Ray,

I have hunted in the UK, France, Egypt and Greece, and in all these places there are rgulations about how far you must be from the higway in order to shoot. I assume that Cyprus has the same regulations, but obviously no one is there to enforce them.

The worrying thing is that all these men who use shotguns, apparently recklessly and without much skill, have been through army training! Makes you wonder what they teach them there about safety!

On the other hand, at the bi annual conferences of the International Union of Game Biologists the Cyprus wildlife authorities put in a good performance with up to the minute professional studies and lots of original research. So we seem to have another Cyprus paradox.

I have nothing against hunting itself, if carried out within legal guidelines (quotas, type of animal, location etc) its an activity that many people enjoy, but WHY cannot they abide to the rules? Thats the bit I don't get!!! The few (as usual) are blackening the name of all, its not fair to ban it altogether, but how do you "police" such activities over such huge areas? Perhaps the hunting associations themselves ought to appoint marshalls or something and "police" themselves?

Can someone name 1 person who has been shot dead in a hunting incident or someone who has been even slightly injured by hunters while driving in the country side?

Tess,

Self policing is how it happens in Greece. The Hunters Confederation has hired 300 Game Wardens who police hunters. Thir prosecutions far outnmebr those of all the state agencies (forestry, police etc) combined. Maybe Cyprus should look into doing it this way. We also have hunter exams and a stream of information material in the form of magazines, DVDs, websites, even newspapers that publish weekly supplements aimed at informing and educating.

One note here- seems that the average Cypriot is just not willing to be informed, he seems to know it all, especially in such macho matters as hunting, fishing and ..... barbecuing of course. It often seems to me that people tend to hunt like they drive, this is a totally personal observation of course.

Nikitas,
Those of us that have lived in Cyprus for a while are all too well aware that Cyprus lives by paradox in just about all things.
There are laws about hunting exclusion zones and laws about cruelty to animals but you just try and get a Cypriot into court on such a charge.
We "aliens" as they like to call us have no rights in their eyes in Cyprus.
A lot needs to change here.

Cypriots hunt, fish, bbq. drive etc. the Cypriot way. We don't need 'aliens' to try and change our way of life. If they don't like it or accept it, they can go back to where they came from (as if it's any better there).

I am not trying to change the way of life - I am just suggesting that people do not break the law - their OWN law.
