Someone should put an end to this madness

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

It still doesn't change my view that I think the Turkish Cypriots deserve their own state.

Unfortunately for you and the others who hold that view, Expatkiwi, that is not going to happen. The international community will see to that. The best that the T/C's could hope for is federation of some kind. So I guess you're going to have to change the way you look at the issue...

hmmmm...lets see...two non Cypriots knowing more than a Cypriot, and with personal losses to boot...

Lets analyze it a bit further, shall we?

We have a Kwik who admits he was let down a misleading path quite recently, while showing his complete ignorance on the subject, by if he was mislead once, it's quite, and I mean quite possible that he was mislead on a number of occasions...I put that down to ignorance and I do say ignorance that firstly his knnowledge is limited and secondly and most important ignorance to see that it takes two to tango...blink...blink...the occupied is promoted on ETHNIC CLEANSED LAND and it can never be a state due to world reprocussions around the globe...

And on the other hand we have a Canadian that joined 2months ago, suppossingly neutral, remains to be seen, preaching us on how things should be , and having the ignorance to pass judgement...without the slightest hint of knowledge...

The mind boggles...

but hey who am i you two might have a point...

PS...Could it be a slight, and I mean a very minut possibility that you two are slightly clueless?...But hey again what do I know?

LENA...this is for you baby...no swearing

Halil , I dont think anyone can deny the existence of fanatics , be it G/Cs T/Cs or any other nationality for that matter. What matters is that when acts perpetrated by fanatics are CONDEMNED and measures taken to prevent such acts. Also what matters is that NO ONE claims that the entire nation IS responsible for these despicable acts . Propaganda unfortunately still plays a leading role in the CYPROB , propaganda such as inventing stories to score points. The responsible Cypriots are totaly against such acts and will never defend them by comparing them to reciprocal acts.
I will email if you could meet on Tuesday 4th December. Dint worry if not around , will get a cab.

Save your breath my friends,

Concurrently with the allegations of attacks against TC shoppers the regime is attempting to curb shopping by TCs in the south. They have a self determined limit of 150 CYP worth of goods per person and they check returning shoppers at the check points. Seeing that this is not enough to discourage shoppers they now start the bullshit campaign to terrorise them with imaginary attacks.

It is apparently OK for GCs to go north and gamble in their casinos but it is not OK for TCs to come south and visit IKEA or Orfanidis. Makes you wonder what happened with that "We are the true Europeans" crap Mr Talat was dishing out a few months back. Being in the EU means being in a FREE TRADE area. Free Trade, got that?

Senre Levent wrote about shopping in the south as a form of protest, might have been yesterday or day before. Read it, it is worth it.

Free trade? I hear you loud and clear, and I believe that genuinely free trade would set many processes in motion that would bring reconciliation closer.
However, free trade is a two way street. Why is there a limit of 135 euros on the amount of goods that visitors from the south to the north may bring back? And there are pretty stringent controls in place, including random bag searches and confiscations. As far as I can see, both sides are playing the same game.

Tim,

The limits in the south are tied in with VAT charges and there was an announcement in yesterday's papers about the VAT contribution by small retailers who come to the south to sell their wares. It was a revelation to me that small traders can come to the south to sell. Presumably there is no corresponding facility for traders travelling from south to north.

The second problems is the application of the so called Green Line regulations decreed by the EU. As the north has refused to be part of the EU legal order and apply the relevant rules and regulatiosn it is treated as a non EU area for travellers hence the limits on purchases.

The solution is easy- apply EU regulations everywhere but that would mean dropping some of the trappings of a separate country that the north wants to exhibit, mostly in small details.
