Kasperian

Postby Dave G » Mon Nov 26, 2007 9:21 pm

I lived in Cyprus in the late 1950's as a youngster. I can remember that the village we lived in was called Kasperian (spelling may be wrong), and I think that it was in sight of the Nicosia city wall. I could be wrong about that though as I was only 8 or 9 at the time. It was a Turkish village, and it was in the bend of a river. There was a Greek village just the other side of the river. Having recently bought an apartment in Paphos, on one of my visits I would like to explore my roots, but Googling the name does not come up with much. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Dave

To the best of my recollection, Kasparian was a prominent family living in central Nicosia - within the old walls. Their mansion was enormous. I believe they used to manufacture soap from olive oil. The store rooms still reeked of this 'use-for-all-soap. Some of us of a mature age might remember the old blocks of soap.
A friend of mine use to live in the house (I am sure with the blessings of the Armenian Kasparian family). I used to go to the Central Post Office with my friend collecting their mail. (which was forwarded to the Armenian family. These would be the years 1959/63.
I can not recollect a village with that name you mention. The nearest I can remember is Ay. Kassiano?
I hope that will be of help.

Could this be "Kalisperas" by any chance? That's a land mark building/area as soon as you enter Nicosia from the south. Other than that it doesn't ring any bells...

The only ones starting with "k" around Nicosia are Kato Lakatamia, Kato Deftera, Kaimagli, and Kionelli. None seem to resemble that.

The way he wrote it, it sounded like an Armenian name, and Kasparian is what came to my mind. Not a village name. A mystery. He better check his sources again.

There was of course Kosklu Ciftlik (Kiosklou Tsiflik) right behind Ledra Palace Hotel and Kermia further along . The river passes by both (dont ask me why its called a river).

It means a 'farm' or 'ranch'. Maybe our GC friends could let us know if they use the same word in Greek. They might have it in Gibreia? It is a very old Turkish name of the area. I attempted to make it easier to read for our GCs.
