Jansler give more details so people can help you. You have two bank accounts in Cyprus and you want to order stuff from UK? And you need a credit card to do that so you are asking of you can get one?

If is the case of course you can you just go to bank that you have an account and request that. Wont take long if I remember correct!

As a note of interest some banks will give you a credit card only if you block an equal amount in your account with them .

In other words if you want a credit limit of say £1000 then £1000 will be put aside in your normal account and you will have no access to it .

As you can see this is hardly giving you credit really if you have to leave that amount as security in your own account first.

It seems that this applies more to foreigners without any bank history wanting their first card .

As far as EU rights are concerned everybody should be treated equally foreigner or not ~ but this is Cyprus and things are done slightly different here.

I don't have a CY bank credit card as I have kept my UK one and although I've been offered a BOC card many times I'll stick with my UK one as it gives better benefits and a much much higher limit than I could ever expect from a Cypriot bank.

I've got an Internet Visa with BOC which has a credit of only CYP200. I think anyone can get these cards. If I want to make purchases for a larger amount I can simply pay some money on the account. I also have a debit card on my Laiki account. I normally use my normal Amex or my Visa world wide. I find lately though that purchases in the US do not get approved. More and more they are only accepting CC's with American banks. Your best bet is to go to your local bank and tell them your specific needs.

the point to make is "credit" rather than "debit"

I have a Barclaycard which gives me credit - so i spent their money - and every month i check the bill and pay the balance. If someone charged me wrong or the goods don't arrive and i cannot get the supplier to resolve - i call Barclaycard who flag the transaction and then attempt to resolve directly with the supplier.

When its a debit card my money has gone already so it will be near to impossible to resolve.

Yes, it is crazy how funds are 'blocked' in your account; as Bill says. I have a £5000 limit on my BoC credit card, for which they block £5000 in my account - on which they do pay interest. yet I have no limit on my AMEX.

I have a Visa and an Amex, but BOC doesn't hold any money for collateral. I've been banking with them for many years so maybe that's why.
