Aha... True.
I was thinking more along the lines of some future US' potential new military operation in the Middle East. Had they not asked for SBA runways to be made available to them for the war in Iraq? Presumably, if they got their own airbase on Cyprus, that kind of leverage (minimal though it may be) would simply evaporate for the Brits.
