Come on man that was not nice...I watched the doco on these poor people and they are intelectually challenged...no need to bring this into it, as this could happen to any of us...

A joke is funny, but I think you are crossing the line here...

CopperLine wrote:There is an interesting and informative study conducted by researchers from the Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) called "Beyond numbers : an inquiry into the political integration of the Turkish settlers in northern Cyprus" It is a little bit dated now as it ws published in 2005. You can download it from :

http://www.prio.no/page/Publication_details//9429/46909.html

The first chapter of this surveys population data for the north.

They use the word settlers within quotes, preferring to call them Turkish immigrants instead, while they do not use quotes for the "trnc". This PRIO are the ones sending me pro-Annan booklets before the referendum.

I don't know what kind of interests are behind it, but obviously they found it convenient to hide behind a name with the word "peace" in it.

If you want a real information about this issue you can read the report published by the Council of Europe:

no, the reason i mentioned it was the ignorance shown by the turks!

that we will have as many kids as we want and sod it if we are not in a position to look after them! it took the english to go to turkey and help these poor people! and in fact while they were there the turkish army came to chase them out! and these are the people that are trying to infiltrate our country- no thanks boomers, they are backward and have no business in europe!

we have less kids and make sure we can do well by them, giving them everything they need!

Piratis,
That they do or do not use scare quotes around certain words or phrases does not imply anything specific point about the population data. My reading of the PRIO document is that immigrant is used as the general category, whilst settler - which is not an internationally recognised classification term in population studies - is used loosely to designate those who seem to stay, i.e, settle. But 'settle' is not a commonly accepted term, there being important close synonyms such as permanent resident, temporary resident, migrant worker, and so on. A migrant worker for example might actually be resident in country for years or decades, leaving the country of work just once a year or less.

Population data collections tries to classify according to the current distribution and actual location or position of people. Thus temporary resident is preferred over 'settler' not because of some nefarious political scheming, but because 'settler' refers to a motivating intention of a person and not the current location or position of a person. Population data is indifferent to people's intentions or motivatons, that's not what is being measured !

The "trnc" is not internationally recognized either but they choose not to use quotes when they referred to it. So even if what you say is true about the science of population data collections (I am not an expert on this to approve or disprove your claim), it is obvious that being correct was not the motive behind their choice of using or not using quotes, otherwise they would have used quotes around "trnc".
